Snow in Maryland in Biblical Proportions
I measured 30+ inches in my driveway this morning and it is still coming down. Probable another 5-10 inches before it all stops. I wish I had a shorter driveway, today! Not that it would matter much. Snow plows don't anticipate getting to my neigborhood until Monday night or Tuesday. Neighbors are c...

Re: Port Evangelizing
I, too, look for opportunities to bring new Port drinkers into the fold. I almost always have something open at home and offer a taste to anyone who may be around when we are entertaining. For larger parties, I will open a couple of bottles specifically for that event. I am always either trying to c...

Re: Do you remember your very first FULL CASE purchase of Port?
My first case purchase was just a couple of weeks ago -- 1937 Noval Colheita (plus 2 additional loose bottles of the same.) Otherwise, I have mostly single bottles of various Colheitas, Tawnies, LBVs and Vintages. I have found that this becomes painful when I open one of the singles that I REALLY lo...

My wife and I have become serious fans of Vin Santo. They will never replace Port for me, but I have become fond of them.

Re: Times & cellars have changed/evolved your oldest bottle of VP & Colheita are?
My oldest Colheita is the 1937 Noval. The next oldest is the 1986 Delaforce. The oldest Vintages, currently, are 1970 Dow and 1970 Fonseca, followed by 1977 Croft and 1977 Taylor. The oldest vintage I have ever consumed is the 1963 Fonseca, though I have no bottles of this left. Maybe one day I will...

1937 Quinta do Noval Colheita Port
Opened December 9, 2009 --- bottled 2006 --- and this was so good I am inspired to post my first tasting note: I had one bottle of this that I bought several months ago from a local shop. He offered to sell me an additional 14 bottles, so I had to try this before making such a commitment. As soon as...

Re: Your Top 10 Port List for 2009 & Discussion
As I read this, I realize the dominance of Colheita's on the list. Funny ... since I am more of a Vintage drinker. Probably because I tend to drink more Port with my brother/sister-in-law and they are Tawny drinkers. But, I am working on them. Actually, it seems that they are "working" on...

Re: Your Top 10 Port List for 2009 & Discussion
For 2009, so far, my list is: 1937 Noval Colhieta: Opened 2 nights ago when my 'dealer' said he had 14 bottles available. Celebrated by opening the one that I had. Going tonight to buy them. 1983 Graham: Served at this year's Sukkot party to several wine drinkers who had little experience with Port....

1 bottle of Taylor's 2003 LBV at $19.99
I had planned to open this last night, but I got distracted by a bottle of 1937 Noval Colheita. Amazing stuff!

Probably some mundane picks, here, but my list is:
10 Year: Quinta do Portal
20 Year: Taylor
30 Year: Feist (only had this and Casa de Santa Eufemia, so not many options)
40 Year: Quint do Noval

Re: What is the average age of the Vintage Ports in your cellar?
Just Vintage Port: 16.1 years average
Vintage plus LBVs: 14.4 years average
Vintage plus LBVs plus Colheitas: 16.2 years
I know that I went beyond the scope of the original question, but I did answer that one first

Re: Port Offline in Northern Virginia or Washington DC?
Mid-January would work great! I have a modest selection of Port and could provide a mix of colheita's, vintages, tawnys with an indication of age and LBVs. I am flexible on the location. I would even be happy to host, though my home may be a bit of a haul for you. We could also do at a more central ...

Re: Port Offline in Northern Virginia or Washington DC?
Hi Mike, I live in Maryland, between Washington and Baltimore. I have been on an active campaign to create more appreciation of Port in the area and have made a little progress. I have a neighbor and a brother-in-law who I might be able to enlist in a local tasting. My wife and I would certainly be ...

Re: What Port(s) have you purchased this week?
Just purchased a 1970 Fonseca (one more item off my wish list) and a 1983 Fonseca. They only had 1 bottle of each, so I will now agonize over whether to cellar or drink. Any suggestions regarding that decision would be appreciated. -- Gary Cellar the 1970 and drink the 1983. I say that as once you ...

I just re-organized my wine last night since we finished the move into our new house. To celebrate, we opened a 1982 Krohn Colheita.

Re: My first Colheita experience ...
I tried my first colheita in 2005 -- a 1966 Kopke. I picked up this bottle in a little store in Sintra. The man running the store gave me my first lesson in all things Port. He let us (me and my wife) taste several open bottles that he had left from a tasting the day before. We bought several bottle...

I will stick to the guidelines and just pick one.
1945 Fonseca vintage.
The 1937 Quinta do Noval colheita would have been the pick, but I have a bottle of that to open in August when I move into my new house.

Re: What Port will you be drinking this holiday weekend?
Probably a 1999 Felsina Vin Santo. I don't know my Vin Santo, but dinner with my friend the sommelier at an Italian restaurant introduced me to them recently. I loved the ones we had. My wife and I just started getting into Vin Santo about a year ago. They can be interesting wines. Port is still my...
