Page Height Again
Apologies for bringing this up again. I'm still suffering from a lack of page height on the forums. Having had a look at the source code, I think the problem is that I usually browse with JavaScript disabled and the forum is using JavaScript to automatically adjust the height of the forum iframe. No...

Re: Port Bottles and Global Warming
I doubt any of them would take the chance with Vintage, or even aged Tawny/Colheitas. Too much of a chance of leeching from the plastic over extended period of time. Cheap Ruby, perhaps, but I'd bet that in an industry with as much tradition as the Port industry, you won't see it. Even moving from ...

Re: Half bottles: are they relevant?
I would agree with everything said above about the advantages of half-bottles. I also quite like the 500ml size as I find that I often don't make it through the last 250ml of a regular bottle whilst its at its peak. As a general thought, half bottles might also be quite interesting for group tasting...

Re: Port Bottles and Global Warming
Those cartons aren't quite as bad to those plastic bottles that some supermarket wine comes in and I think that both are better than those boxes! At least they fit in the fridge! Following on from Uncle Tom's comment, I suppose wine producers could learn a bit from the beer brewers and organise coll...

Re: Scrolling down
I think the cause might be a rogue "scrolling="no"" in the forum's iframe tag which fixes the iframe's height at 1200. If anyone is in need of a temporary solution, then right-clicking on the "phpBB" image and selecting either "open in new window" or "ope...

Port Bottles and Global Warming
Forgive me if this has been discussed before…I've tried to check but I'm not sure I'm operating the new "search" function correctly! Anyway, there was an interesting article in one of the Saturday newspapers here about the weight of wine bottles and their corresponding effect on the atmosp...

Out of curiosity, isn’t this the case for all wines? I though that although some oxidized wines (such as Madeira) can survive less than optimal storage conditions, all wine should be stored in the cool and dark.Erik Wiechers wrote: - Just as some wines, Port should be kept in a cool and dark place

Hey Moses, I thought you Americans had laws against Cuban cigars? Yes, there's an embargo against Cuban product importation since the 1960's; yet the USA is still one of Cuba's largest cigar markets... Go figure. There’s quite a nice story (which I’ve seen in some reputable places so I presume it i...

Has the traditon been modified as most folks do not smkoe indoors or if so, not in the dining table? The recent ban on smoking in public places has gone further than anything else to put and end the practice in the U.K., as only place where it could still happen is formal dinning at a private resid...

I find it quite surprising that Port is generally not more popular, especially here in the U.K. where most families drink a least one bottle a year (at Christmas). Perhaps this is just a reflection of my own taste buds, but I would have thought it is one of the most “accessible” wines with its sweet...

This thread reminded me of a few articles that appeared in the press here, just before Christmas, which reported that some Chinese tourists had visited the Ivy (an expensive restaurant in London) ordered a bottle of Pétrus with their meal, for about a £1,000, and then decided to mix it with coca-col...

Thanks to everyone for their replies. In reply to Todd’s question— I’m afraid there isn’t very much in way of family history of this decanter— the most I know is that it was owned by my great grandparents (which would, I suppose, date it from at least the late Victorian period) and has been passed d...

Thanks for your reply. Half bottles sound like a way to go, although I don’t see them around very often. I was also thinking that if a glass or two gets “tasted” at decanting time, then the rest will probably fit in… I initially thought that it might have been for a Whiskey or another spirit but bas...

Decanter Sizes
Dear everyone, I am one of the “lurkers” who has just signed up for an account, as requested in the other forum, although, I’m afraid, it is in order to ask a question! Being the only Port drinker in the family, I’ve been passed on a decanter that has been in the family for some time. What makes me ...
