Re: The Best 50 year-old Tawny?

For me the best 50 Year Old Tawny Port is currently DR. In my experience, a lot of producers' 50s seem to be out-of-character for their house styles. I.e. the 50 does not seem like it fits into the 10-20-30-40 progression. Noval is an example of that - their 50 is (at least to me) dramatically more ...

Re: What Port(s) have you purchased this week?

Mike, Andrew K and Brad B went in together and bought a case of 1963 Smith Woodhouse and 10 bottles of 1966 Rabello Valente at that amazing Port Auction at Heritage. Got beat out on 1994 Vesuvio and two different lots of 1970 Fonseca...hope they went to happy FTLOPers. [cheers.gif] I got one of the...

1940 Kopke Colheita (375ml) bottles 2013

It was a little dull, probably due to bottle age, but the effect didn't feel like bottle age so it was confusing. Still a very nice Port!

Re: 2024 Vintage Port declarations are starting

I accidentally reversed 2 of the colors... in this picture, purple is Vinhos dos Cardenhos (north of the house) and Port Arthur (south and east of the house). Blue is then a block of Sousao, brown is the block of Alicante Bouchet, and green is a block of Touriga Franca. Most of what's above the road...

Re: 2024 Vintage Port declarations are starting

SYMINGTON FAMILY DECLARES 2024 VINTAGE PORTS ... I'm surprised to see so much Alicante Bouschet listed. I'm quite familiar with the grape (Mouchão!), but I've never seen it come up on lists of the 5 or 6 most common grapes used in Vintage Port. I'm pretty sure that there is Alicante Boushet in Grah...

Graham’s The Stone Terraces 2024 Vintage Port Made from two low-yielding vineyards of just under three hectares laid out on magnificent stone terraces at Quinta dos Malvedos. 2024 is only the sixth vintage of this extraordinary wine. Production: 520 cases (9L) – just 2% of the total production at Q...

Re: 1976 Taylor Single Harvest Tawny

A snippet that I learned a couple of weeks ago is that this wine did not come from Krohn stocks but was a more recent acquisition from a family who had full IVP/IVDP paperwork to show it is properly a 1976 Colheita. Good to know! The 1976 Krohn is well-known amongst this crowd, so it would be inter...

Re: What Port(s) have you purchased this week?

I bought a Krohn Vintage 1961 this week and fortunately it arrived in perfect condition. It was very well packaged. I’m very curious to see how this vintage port tastes. I haven’t decided on the exact moment to open it yet. How long would you recommend decanting it? I’ve read quite a few different ...

Re: Lots of new faces ... please introduce yourself

In fact, there has been a ...

Re: Sailor Porto 1940

A Colheita from 1940 can be very valuable, but there are 2 things about your bottle that likely lower that value. The first is that it is a virtually unknown Port house. This is the first time that I've ever heard of Sailor Porto. A 1940 Colheita from a well-known house could be worth several hundre...

A year-dated "Finest Reserve"? That seems like an odd labeling.

Re: What Port(s) have you purchased this week?

Real Vinicola effectively no longer exists. Its assets were purchased by The Fladgate Partnership in 2011, but Real Companha Velha retained the rights to the Real Companha Vinicola do Norte name. From what I can find, this wine is allegedly from 1944 and was bottled in 1987. It's a Tawny Port, but f...

S. Leonardo Porto Mother Wine Origin of the 30 Year Old Tawny Port (500 ml, b. 2022) This was bottled straight out of the infamous Tonel #9 at Port Knox, and IIRC is a 1972 Colheita that lacks proper documentation to be bottled and labeled as such. It was always one of my favorite Ports to get to ta...

Re: What Happened in 1994 Onward?

There were pretty significant improvements throughout the Douro that started in the 1980s (particularly after Portugal entered the EU in 1986) but really came to fruition in the mid-1990s. I don't think there was really any one thing that happened, but rather several things that came together. New p...

1995 Porto Souza Vintage Port

Opened for a book club which read Theo of Golden by Allen Levi, in which Vintage Port plays a role in forming connections between characters. Color: medium dark red tending toward burgundy and/or brick. Not opaque, but pretty dense. Nose: ripe red fruits - some raspberry, definitely some red currant...
