Re: Bonham Skinner September Auction.

Yeah I remember discussing the 1875 D'Oliveiras Malvasia Family Reserve with Roy back in the day. That was when it had reached $300 per bottle, which I (naively) thought was really expensive. He said he remembered buying it for $175! By the time I got my act together and bought some, it was $840/bot...

Re: Bonham Skinner September Auction.

2400 bucks, not bad... https://www.bonhams.com/auction/30244/lot/210/barbeito-terrantez-reserva-velha-faja-dos-padres-1950-1-bottle/ Unfortunately I only have one in my cellar... Wow! And I thought that the price I paid for my 1 bottle was high, but that was just over half of what this one sold for!

Re: What Madeira(s) Have You Purchased Recently?

I didn't get any response here :( So I contacted Mannie directly, and purchased 3 bottles of O Americano. :-) Sorry, I didn't respond because I didn't get an email from Mannie. I just knew that it was coming soon-ish because I follow Ricardo on Facebook, so I (like you) just reached out to Mannie d...

Re: What have you opened this week?

1985 Vista Alegre Colheita - bottled 2024. After having this on "Glenn's Tour" I bought several. I bought 6! Yes, a very nice Colheita and a great price. The "high up" views from DR and Vallegre are both great, but there's something about the view from Quinta do Mourao that I al...

Re: What have you opened this week?

As for the Vesuvio, that was really interesting. Glenn will tell you that a score of 87-89 from me indicates a wine that will bring pleasure and enjoyment when drunk. But I did feel that the fruit was a little over-ripe and a touch too sweet compared to the freshness that most other Ports had. But ...

Re: Regret not pulling the trigger?

My biggest regret is not pulling the trigger on the first FTLOP São Leonardo sale which included delivery to Europe. I really, really should have bought a handful of bottles of the SL 100yo bottled in 75cl for $150. Last time I looked it was $2,000 for a 50cl bottle. My memory is that the 100yo was...

I wasn't able to watch because I was at a party where we drank:

1977 Gould Campbell (magnum)
1997 Gould Campbell (750)
DR 30 Year Old Tawny Port (750)

Re: What have you opened this week?

1977 Gould Campbell, from magnum These really need a lot of decant time. I gave this one 5 hours in a ship's decanter before re-bottling, then it was consumed at a party over another 5 hours. It didn't really start to shine until the end, so I probably should have decanted it for at least 8 hours to...

2011 Andresen LBV. Slightly drier than I usually drink, which I think works better with food. It certainly went well with steaks!

Re: a competitor for the Durand

Uh. How short is that cork screw? lol If you look at the pictures, the whole thing is 5" high and the worm appears to be very slightly more than half of that. So 2.5" or maybe a tiny bit more? Which of course means nothing to me because I have no idea how long a corkscrew worm usually is!...

5 x 1991 Vesuvio 1 x 2003 Quinta do Noval Silval I didn't realize that Noval also made a Silval in 2003, so thought I'd give it a try. I really like the regular 2003 Noval. 1 x 1984 Graham's Malvedos A couple of the Vesuvios and the Malvedos are birth year Ports for a wedding. 1991 isn't too bad, bu...

a competitor for the Durand

Just ran into this randomly while making a purchase at Rue Pinard. (Which used to be Old Liquors... AFAIK they're still in Miami.) https://www.ruepinard.com/products/starship-old-cork-extractor-ogb Fun design especially if you're a Star Trek fan, but the main thing is that it's significantly less ex...

Arguably, it probably was a 50 year old. Those older bottles circa 2010-2012 have always seemed like there were a very different, older blend.

1906 Brunheda Colheita Port

I acquired this bottle on the 2019 Port Harvest Tour. On that tour, Roy asked Brunheda to make it available because he knew I'd want one. This was the first Port that I ever gave 100 points, way back in 2009. Original tasting note here. Opened with dessert at The Herbfarm in Woodinville, WA after a ...

1906 Brunheda Colheita, b. 2019 This was the first Port that I ever gave 100 points, way back in 2008 which was just 4 years into my Port "career". ( TN here. ) Roy had brought a bottle back to the US to share with Stewart for some FTLOP anniversary or another, and he saved a glass for me....

Re: 1994 Quinta do Crasto LBV Port

As a side: I think this is a good example that most unfiltered LBV’s are best around the 20 year mark. By the third decade they rapidly start losing the complexity to keep them very appealing and make it worth taking up cellar space. As a general rule of thumb, yeah I'd say 20-25 years. But as with...
