Re: Change of Heart?

All bottling lines I've ever seen in California use nitrogen or rarely carbon dioxide to blast out any possible debris in the bottles while they are upside down. Compressed air is never used because it is contaminated with oil and air has oxygen which will oxidize the wine as soon as it goes into th...

Re: Offline in the Los Angeles area January 10-11, 2020

I have a Quinta do Noval Garrafeira Velha bottled in 1941 I'm thinking of bringing for Friday night. Since it has been in bottle for almost eighty years it might show better the next day, we can decide that night. I'll bring a vintage port as well when we have a better idea of the theme for Saturday.

The label in English was probably put on by the importer. I've seen import labels with the wrong region before.

Pinot Noir is an early ripening grape. It needs a cooler area than most grapes and probably is planted on a North facing slope at the Quinta

I'm curious what you have from the 1950's that has rippled glass. Bottles were reused constantly and just because it is bottled in the 1950s does not mean that it is made then.

Re: an interesting find. a big Sandeman.

The rippled glass is indicative of pre 1900 bottles. None of my ports from the 1920s have this rippled glass and they are all machine made bottles. You mention the seams which indicates a mold.Your bottle was probably hand blown into a mold. A large size like this is relatively rare and is worth mon...

Fonseca Vertical

I own twelve vintages of Fonseca with six of them being great vintages from 1920 to 1955 in excellent condition. I have a chance to buy a 1900 Fonseca that is in great condition for its age. But I hate to spent $1850 to add it to a vertical tasting without knowing if enough people are interested in ...

Re: Pricing Issues

I've been trying to restock some Madeira I had years ago. The prices are so high I can not justify it since older port can be more reasonable in price. An younger port is far more reasonable.

I have not even seen 27 Fonseca available for a long time. I've been able to get 27 Taylor in great shape but Fonseca is much rarer.

Re: Best Port(s) you have had in 2018?

Opened 45, 63, and 85 Sandeman over the course of a few weeks. All were very good but the 45 was really special and far better than the 63 which is one of the better Sandemans. 45 was still very powerful 97 or 98 points. Actually better than a 31 Noval opened a month earlier

Older Ports Getting Very Rare

I first started buying from Christie's and Sotheby's in the early 1980's. Every auction was full of old wine of all types. In England I was at a pub and 1931 Quinta do Noval was available for £70 (it rocked my world). One English merchant had a huge quantity of 1931 Noval available - did I want 25 c...

D'Oliveira Madeira - far cheaper than RareWineCo

I bought a large amount of Madeira two years ago from England and had it shipped in a refrigerated container. Currently stored at 55 degrees in Napa, CA. Want to sell some to buy even older Madeira. D'Oliveira Bual 1903 bottled 2016 $675 (Rare Wine Company $875) D'Oliveira Bual 1908 bottled 2015 $52...

Extensive Cellar for Sale

I am moving out of state and am selling half my wine cellar. All have been stored at 55 degrees since purchase. Most I imported myself or bought directly from the US Distributor. The list has drinking port to truly great wines. Somebody wanting to do a Fonseca vertical will find many. I'm happy to s...
