Re: Port in fiction books

Funny this subject should come up. November is National Novel Writing Month (www.nanowrimo.org) where folks who have that novel trapped inside are encouraged to get it down on paper through the month of November. The National part I think is from its roots in the US, but it's a worldwide effort. I'v...

Re: What Port(s) will you be enjoying for Thanksgiving dinner?

For the US, that would be tomorrow, Nov 26. Sadly, I missed the Canadian one back in October.

The beauty of being a Canadian in the US...I get to celebrate two Thanksgivings. [dance2.gif]

What Port(s) will you be enjoying for Thanksgiving dinner?

I've got a 1992 Vesuvio picked out and ready to go. How will you be giving thanks?

Re: 2003 Osborne LBV

Final Notes At $17.99 I'd recommend this as a pretty good House Port or standby for the next couple of years. You just can't beat the price for what you get in this bottle. It's nothing extremely special, but it's a good, flavourful, warming drink for the winter months. This is a good port to have ...

Re: Should a wine critic promote a wine ...

I have a copy or two of previous years of Hugh's book and nowhere is he specific, and in many cases he is generic enough to provide a guide to wines as opposed to an authoritative source on a specific vintage. His rating scale is 5 *'s, the descriptions are usually of the winery or generalities abou...

Re: What Port(s) have you purchased this week?

Bought a $16 bottle of 2003 Osborne LBV on Sunday in the hopes it tastes pretty good to stock up on as a value buy. Lost my Qd.Noval LBV local source, so it's between Osborne and Qd.Ventozello for local supplies.

2003 Osborne LBV Port

This is going to be a multi-day experience, so I'll come back and edit this as time goes by...typing as I taste... Purchased at Total Wine for $17.99. Bottled in 2008. Unfiltered. Decanted 11/23/2009 7pm Opaque; deep, inky purple with blackberry cola at the edges. Not extremely alcoholy, which I nor...

Re: 2000 Martinez Quinta da Eira Velha

A little tanky and spirity on the nose. Thanks for the TN! I noticed "tanky" mentioned a lot in Roy's notes, and again here. I was wondering what "tanky" means to those who describe it? I've not seen it used before in TN's until the recent FTLOP newsletter. I have a saltwater fi...

Offsite Wine Storage

Traditional offsite wine cellar storage is hard to come by (at least in my neck of the woods). I have seen some self-storage units touting climate control, and some advertising wine storage in above-ground facilities at 55F/70%RH. Has anybody used these facilities before? I'm fairly happy with my cu...

Re: Decanting port

I have the following style of decanter: http://www.wineexpedition.com/wp-content/2009/02/decanter-thumb.gif I actually have two of them, one is a little smaller that a glass/crystal stopper can fit into. While I can't speak for everyone else, I generally (when I'm around), leave the decanter open. I...

The Wine Cellar in Midlothian, VA

For those in Virginia or in surrounding states near Midlothain, VA, I came across this wine shop (to which I have no affiliation). Posting this more because it has a few Ports that are rare to find in Virgina. Tawny's are a little pricey...well, most of it is, but I think the Dona Maria, Romariz, La...

Re: Aguardente

I could be completely wrong here, but my limited understanding is that the brandy used in making Port is "brandy" not the "Brandy" most of us recognize and drink that you mention. I believe the "brandy" is clear and not the same. Similar maybe, but not the same.

I keep skipping by this thread since I've been a member since '05, but it's been a couple of years since I've been "active" in Port, so I suppose I should throw my hat into the mix and reintroduce myself. I'm in the Northern Virginia/DC Metro area, just outside Virginia Wine Country. Havin...

TN: 2006 Altano Reserva Duoro

I opened this a few days ago and had some with dinner. Deep purple colour, nose of grapes, blackberry, hints of chocolate. I don't recall ever having a wine that tasted radically different than it smelled that wasn't off in some way. This wine wasn't off, but the flavour wasn't nearly as complex or ...

Muscat and Sauternes

Not sure if this is the appropriate forum, but I've seen a lot of mention on various threads about Muscat/Muscatel and Sauternes wines, which I gather are sweet. For the uninitiated who would like to learn more about these, can someone describe these wines in general, and what some decent entry-leve...
