Re: Dacanting 1980 Graham's

Excellent. Thank you for your help. I should have no trouble decanting 6-8 hours prior. I finally found someone in my circle that enjoys port like I do, so I'm going to start opening some of these I've been cellaring!

Dacanting 1980 Graham's

I'm going to drink my only bottle of 1980 Graham's on Thursday evening. When should I decant it?

NV Fonseca Bin 27 Port

Well I finally got around to sampling this wine. I decanted the bottle and poured a glass at the same time. There was some earlier conversation about two possible variants of Bin 27 - this one says "Finest Reserve." The nose: gunpowder (call me crazy but I also swear I smelled Hoppes #9 gu...

Order of Tasting

Hello All, I am assembling various port styles from Niepoort for a port tasting evening sometime before Summer. I wanted to keep the House the same in order to maximize the style differences and minimize other differences. So I have Niepoort's: Ruby, 10 year Tawny, LBV 1999, and Vintage Character. I...

Six Grapes

Well, my vote is for the Six Grapes. I think it would be worthwhile to work our way through all of the major rubys so that we can have a thorough reference. Then move on to another style to explore in the same manner. I have found that organizing the tasting process in this way, keeping similar wine...

The Source

Alex, No I do not have any other wines from the same source. This bottle was a bit of an experiment that way. I asked the wine bar owner if he and his supplier store their wines in a temp. controlled environment and he assured me that they did. Well, I think I am done buying from him. I am seeing th...

Don PX

Andy,

Sorry I can't answer your question, but I would like to hear from you after you open the bottle. I have one of these that I picked up a month or so ago, and like you, have no experience with it. If I open mine first I will post here as well.

1/2 bottles

Thanks Roy, I do have a .375 in addition to a full bottle of the '94 Graham's. I've been thinking it is about time to test it and see... I am quite attracted to 1/2 bottles, just because I don't drink very much, and I don't want a bunch of waste. I usually have one or maybe two glasses in an evening...

VP splits

Fred, I am sure it won't keep me from other VP's... I have a nice horizontal going of 94 ports (15 or 16) that I am cellaring to celebrate my retirement in 15+ years, and I have a couple of other VPs just waiting for a little more bottle age. So, it won't unless the next 6 I try are as lackluster. V...

1980 Graham's Vintage Port -- (375) My First VP

Hello All, As I posted elsewhere, I took Spring Break down at an Oregon Beach house. I took a Graham's 1980 in a half bottle. Prior to this I have never had a vintage port. I have had a few NV ports, with Graham's 6 grape being my favorite thus far. Curiously, under the foil seal there was some whit...

Hi Roy, et al.: I do not have any 2003's YET. I am looking, shopping deciding... The most recent port purchases were 1980, 1983, a couple of 1994's and a 10 year tawny. Some of the 2003's are too expensive IMHO. The local shop has Graham's 2003 for $99.99! Yes I live in a medium size town, but even ...

Graham's The Tawny

Hi All, I was just visiting Graham's website, and noticed they introduced a new tawny port called "The Tawny" last November. (http://www.grahams-port.com/newsfr1.htm), I was unable to find (sometimes this means very little) a source of any tasting notes or anywhere to buy a bottle. Anyone ...

Decanting time?

Hello All, I am headed to the Oregon Beach during Spring Break, I will be taking along a 1980 Graham's VP to share with some family that have never tried Port. Because of this, I want their first impression to be the best it can be. So the question is, how long should I decant this particular VP bef...

Portland I-5 wine shop?

Hello all, I am in the Salem, Oregon area for a couple of days. I will be traveling back home through Portland on Wednesday. I would like to stop and browse a good wine store (with an adequate Port selection), that is handy from Interstate 5. Can someone direct me to one please? I will check this fo...

My thoughts

Hi Roy, I know much of this conversation has gone on significantly prior to this post but I just read the thread and would like to add my perspective. I assume: That the truly knowledgeable persons who are confident in navigating their purchases are in the minority. And I assume that those who have ...

I Pulled the trigger

Hi All, I talked to the store manager who called the supplier who assured us that all of their wines are stored in temperature controlled facilities and transportation. And I was glad to discover that the case the bottle was in was also temp. controlled - though it was around 62* - but had only been...

Next Madeira Step

Hello, I just tried the Broadbent Malmsey 10 years, which I enjoyed, but so far Madeira comes in after Vintage Port, and Tawny Port, in terms of my preference of wine style. I am enamoured of the history and uniqueness of how madeira is made, so I want to pursue it further. The question for you more...

Dancing Paper icon?

I tried finding this to no avail. I often see both the highlighted and 'blank' paper icons moving. What does this indicate?

Thanks in advance,
