Casa do Douro

Happy S. João! To those interested in regulatory matters, on this day Law 19/2016, of 24 June, was published, defining the appointment of a special committee which has the mission to solve the financial problems of the Casa do Douro: identify the assets, propose payment plans for existing debts, sel...

Re: Other word for Port

"Generoso" means fortified in Portuguese, and is used in legislation to indicate all fortified wines (Port, Madeira, Moscatel, etc). It is obviously generic in Portuguese and could not be registered on its own as a trademark to designate a fortified wine in Portugal. There are several trad...

I visit often but post very little. I feel no intimidation whatsoever; I just think many times that I have nothing of value to add to the discussions!

Re: Campolargo's Wines

Campolargo is a bit of a maverick and is probably the boldest producer in Bairrada in terms of marketing, atitude, etc. In Portugal I think his cheaper wines have a better price / quality. I quite like Rol de Coisas Antigas, Vinha do Putto, and Diga? (the white).

Re: Do you drink much Ruby, Ruby Reserve or Basic Tawny?

Same as Glenn, I am probably not paying more in total simply because I purchase less bottles of Port. I drink between 50 and 70 whole bottles of Port per year (this does not include tastingos or other occasions where I will only drink a glass)

Re: Do you drink much Ruby, Ruby Reserve or Basic Tawny?

In Portugal you can buy plenty of LBVs for 10 to 12 Euros so I never bother to buy Ruby or Ruby Reserve. I don't think I have ever bought a basic tawny..

Re: Why, when, with what, and how freqquently?

When I am alone (i.e., only with my wife) I drink Port on most days after dinner. A glass (or more) of watever I have open (frequently LBV or 10 year tawny, occasionally VP or Colheita or older tawnies). It is always after eating, so I there is no "with what".

Re: NY Times article on vinho verde

It is very interesting to see that 5 of the 10 wines (!) mentioned in the article are from producers that are not located in the Vinho Verde region: Vidigal, Niepoort, JM Fonseca, Boradbent and João Portugal Ramos. Seems like everyone is trying to cash in on the Vinho Verde trend!
