Re: 1997 Q. do Passaouro

Nine days out. It's been in the refrigerator. Very interesting. More chocolate and cocoa and less fruit, but there's still some very sweet cherry. Overall flavor is much lighter. However, there is an interesting citrus acidity on the finish. Non-specific citrus, but definitely some kind of fruit, no...

1997 Quinta do Passadouro Vintage Port

I just wrote an extremely detailed and comprehensive note on this wine that took 30 minutes and then accidentally hit the escape key that erased the whole thing. I do not have time for a rewrite, so here is a summary: Decant 3 bottles for a desert wine at a conference last week through multiple laye...

What's your favorite Port glass?

Since Roy seems to be stuck overseas (poor man), I thought I should ask my question in Roy-style. I hate those small little things that they give you in restaurants and I rarely pour enough for one of those big 22 ounce cabernet aircraft carriers. I use a small tulip style glass with a short stem th...

Re: birthyear ports

1951. Ugh! Worst year of the Century. I have a few bottles of an Offley Baron de Forrester that are OK, but that's it.

Re: If they loved 1997 Q. do Passdouro, I should suggest that they buy . . .

I got the Passadouro for $30/btl all in including tax and premium at the Acker Merrall auction. I bought it completely blind, knowing nothing about it, because I was outbid on what I really wanted. Not a good auction strategy, but it worked very well. It is an outstanding wine that I would rate 91 o...

If they loved 1997 Q. do Passdouro, I should suggest that they buy . . .

On Friday night, I served 1997 Quinta do Passadouro for desert to a group of lawyers at the closing dinner of the New York State Bar Association Business Law Section Meeting. Double decanted about 4 hours before serving. People loved it. A number said it was the greatest port they had ever had, but ...

Decanting red. needed 1997 Q. do Passadouro

Last month, I bought 6 bottles of 1997 Quinta do Passadouro VP at the Acker Merral Condit auction to use at a wine tasting we are having at the Fall meeting of the Business Law Section of the NYS Bar Association, of which I am an executive officer. Not my brightest move since I have never tasted the...

Re: Who wants to join me bidding on this unbelievable lot!

On the bright side, you can still take that $6,000 and buy yourself a lot of really nice wine... Actually, the money was only half mine. Another BB member agreed to go 50/50 with me and I decided to keep his name secret because there was no need for both of us to look foolish when I could look fooo...

Re: Who wants to join me bidding on this unbelievable lot!

The final bid was $7000, which is where I pushed the bid when I bid $6000. I have reviewed the bidding sequence and I have determined that if we had not bid, the lot would have gone for $5.500, because all bids after that were the competition between me and LoveVino. Which means that LoveVino could ...

Re: Who wants to join me bidding on this unbelievable lot!

If anyhone knows the seller, tell him he owes me a bottle of good Port because I have been the only competing bidder for the last $3,000 +. Then I'll open it in NY and we can all share.

And sale tax unless you go to NJ to pick up.

Re: Who wants to join me bidding on this unbelievable lot!

Oh Well, someone else is going to own the lot. I just pushed the bid to $6,000 and was immediately outbid by an autobid at $7,000. That makes the next bid $7500, which with premium and tax gets just a bit shy of $10,000. It's "worth" that much, but there's too much other wine in this world...

Re: Who wants to join me bidding on this unbelievable lot!

Looks like the price is getting up there into serious money and finding 10 people to put up enough to buy the lot is getting to be a logistic nightmare. One person, maybe two, has expressed a willingness to put up serious money and go halvsies on the lot with me. We will see what develops over the n...

Re: Who wants to join me bidding on this unbelievable lot!

Click on Jay's name to see his profile, and from there you can PM. I'm interested, but need to do a financial check. Also, I might be willing to buy a 1997 or two, as that is my anniversary year. My intention is not to split up the lot, except perhaps for the extra 97s, because that gets complicate...

Re: Who wants to join me bidding on this unbelievable lot!

OK. It's gut check time. I looked at the bottles yesterday and took a lot of photos. I AM NOT an authority on wine bottles and labels, let alone Nacional, but they looked quite good to me. Every bottle that was not completely opaque had a fill of at least bottom neck (the older the lower) except the...

Re: Who wants to join me bidding on this unbelievable lot!

I have just spoken to my contact at Acker. He spoke to the person in charge of the auction who assures him that the lot is for real. It is available for inspection about a 25 minute car ride from my house and I am planning to inspect it on Thursday morning. SO now it is gut check time, boys and girl...

Re: Who wants to join me bidding on this unbelievable lot!

That pricing sounds more like regular Novals than Nacionals, and even then still cheap. I mean even the weak Nacional vintages from the 1980's are in the $200-300 range per bottle. So all these at that cheap....something isn't adding up. Maybe some old Katrina bottles finally showing up, or from an...

Who wants to join me bidding on this unbelievable lot!

So I'm checking out the monthly Acker Internet auction and I always look at the port lots. I find one that is the most amazing Nacional lot i have ever seen. 21 bottles! Why is it on the internet auction? I have no idea. The presale estimate is a mistake, and I put in a few bids and was outbid by an...

Tomorrow night?!?!?! [1974_eating_popcorn.gif] [foilhat.gif] The Nacional? They are part of a long term plan I have posted on other wine BBs. The Wine Canon. What producer/negociant/chateau/house should every wine drinker try at least once before they die? And then someone - either me or Cheryl Mil...
