1963 Calem Vintage Port

1963 Calem Porto Vintage - Portugal, Douro, Porto (8/31/2013) Decanted for two hours, then poured back into the bottle for a one hour transport to a BBQ. Color is light and translucent reddish brown as you would expect for a 50 yar old port. The palate is an excellent mix with caramel, roasted nuts...

1963 Calem decant advice

I have a bottle of 1963 Calem. I am drinking it on Saturday. Any thoughts on decant time? Should I expect a lot of sediment? Should I use the Roy Hersh cheesecloth method? Inquiring minds want to know.

Fonseca 1994

I am thinking of opening the first of three bottles of Fonseca 1994 that I bought on release. Any comments on infanticide, decant time, anything else?

2011. How can I justify buying it if I'm 61 years old?

I've just read a few of the FTLOP articles on the 2011 declaration and it sounds like something to buy. But I'm 61 years old and both of my children do not like port. Comparisons with 1994 are interesting, but I haven't yet opened my 1994s. Comparisons with 1966 are not helpful, because I will be 10...

TN: 1922 D'Oliveiras Madeira Boal

1922 D'Oliveiras Madeira Boal - Portugal, Madeira (6/2/2007) After sorting through recommendations as to how to prepare from Roy Hersh, Francois Audouze, Francois Mauss and Louis D'Oliveira directly from the winery, we settled on a decant two hours prior to drinking. In retrospect, I think those wh...

Re: The Greatest Ports - 2012 edition

The only one of these that I have had is the 1945 Grahams, in Hong Kong in 1981 (before they started counterfeiting everything). I do not know if it was one of the greatest ever, but it is difficult to believe there are very many that are better.

TN: 1922 D'Oliveiras Madeira Boal

1922 D'Oliveiras Madeira Boal - Portugal, Madeira (6/2/2012) My second foray with this wine. We had a bottle of it in 2007 for my mother's 85th birthday, and we had another one for her 90th. Last time, I decanted based upon the recommendation of the D'Oliveiras family and gave it only about 2 hours...

Re: What Port(s) have you purchased this week?

I almost bought a 2009 Taylor, but after tasting it's extreme tanin structure, I decided that it will not be ready to drink until 30 years after I am six feet under, so I passed. I did pick up 8 bottles of 1985 Dow's two weeks ago for a STEAL - $49.92 per bottle all in including tax.

Re: Port and diabetes

Jay, What are you trying to figure out the grams/liter of residual sugar in a bottle of Port? Yes, then I can figure out how much sugar I take in for each ounce I drink, and extrapolate from there, but I think it's about 2.4 grams per ounce, so if I figure 3 grams per ounce for a 20% error margin, ...

Re: So how much sugar is there in this stuff . . . ?

I think the strategy is to take the larger pours, which is still less than normal, drink no more than an ounce each during the first two hours, test blood for glucose level, figure out how many jumping jacks to do, and then [strikethrough]decide on[/strikethrough] finish the rest. There I fixed it ...

Re: So how much sugar is there in this stuff . . . ?

Well, based upon the above (some of which would give my chemistry professor a heart attack for the inaccurate assumptions), if we assume 80 gms of sugar per litre of Port (which seems to be towards the high end of the estimates I have collected), then there are 2.4 grams of sugar per ounce of Port. ...

So how much sugar is there in this stuff . . . ?

I have been trying to get a better reading on the amount of sugar, let's say in grams per litre, in vintage ports, and my Internet reasearch gets me nothing except for a bunch of unreliable comments from people who barely know what Port is. I can find no technical data or spec sheets on specific win...

Re: Port and diabetes

Sorry for jumping in late but I have been out of town for two weeks donating to the fiscal health of the gaming industry. I am a type 2 diabetic, diagnosed in 2009. At that time I was 210 pounds on a 5'9" frame. I got so spooked I lost 30 pounds but have gained 15 back. I drink port but no sug...

Re: Port and diabetes

Jay, please do. I read your initial thread on this on WB and felt bad, knowing your penchant for Port. Others there talked about Gout as well. Both are terrible and Port certainly doesn't help either. I was also diagnosed as a pre-diabetic (type 2) circa 2008. I dropped about 25 pounds and have kep...

Re: Tête-à-tête: Graham's Six Grapes vs. Noval Black

I have not had Six Grapes, but the Noval Black is a very nice "entry level" Port. My wife, who does not like VP because it tastes like cough syrup, enjoys the Noval Black.
