Re: How long have you gone without Port?

I usually have a bottle every other month. Usually vintage or LBVP. The only exception is when I give up all alcohol for six weeks during Lent (time of penance for roman catholics).

Re: Those tasty things in Port

Love--fresh fruits in younger versions and toffee in older versions.

Hate--high, out of balance alcohol or acid notes.

Re: Is Noval Nacional worth the price?

Never having had any National I can only say hat I like cost-effective variety and would definitely take three 1985 Grahams versus two 2011 Grahams. Also I don't believe I will be around when the 2011 is drinking well (I like aged vintages) so it is not that attractive to me. If I get the chance of ...

1970 Graham Vintage Port

7 hr decant light red, expansive mulberry, plum, cinnamon, cherry, licorice nose; soft plum, currant flavors, strong structure, with great integration of alcohol and tannin, beautiful now but has at least 10 to 15 years at this level now and for the future, tannins not obtrusive but noticeable (a go...

Re: Conflict with the Last One

I understand but there comes a time when waiting is a crime. I try to gather my family to celebrate my last bottles of older vintage port. I have the non-vintage when I think they are showing their best. Remember life is too short to drink wine past its prime (believe me we have all experienced that...

1988 Graham Malvedos Vintage Port

Decanted six hours: red with orange-amber cast; open sweet mulberry and plum nose; mellow integrated cherry, plum, mulberry, mocha flavors; acidity well integrated with tannins, seems best now and for 10 to 15 years of plateau. Medium bodied but lighter than the majors. 92 pt. Excellent. 750 ml.

Re: Beginner question about decanting, etc.

I would also use the half bottles and put a nitrogen cap(aerosol cans like "Private Reserve") on it before I do the vacuvin (belts and suspenders mentality). Holds for longer than you might think.

Re: best port style wines?

Another wine to try is the York Creek CA port. I have had several different years and found them to be good with the capability to age. I have only seen them in 375 ml size. Usually at KL Wines. Good hunting and let us know what you think when you find and try one.

Being between 61 and 70 I concur with the original concerns but suggest 375 ml sizes as a compromise. I have successfully aged many of this size and find they so age faster then the 750 ml size. I like the well aged versions but will probably open more youngish ones as I go forward.

Re: Better than perfect

Back to WINE scoring--I think all scoring methods are valid as long as you use them as recommendations and not gospel. I also think the only way to use the recommendation is by reviewing the written description. Anything Mr. Parker describes as "voluptuous" has no acid balance and fails wi...

Glenn, I envy you your ability to receive Roy's overflow of ports. I recognize Roy opens so many that he can't always drink all of them. Thanks for the tasting notes. Jim

Re: Madeira Tasting in San Francisco - Tentative for May 2013

Assuming there will two tastings: 1. I will have to opt out on the personal cellar older vintages or more expensive commercial tasting since the older nuances would probably be lost on me and I cannot go the "higher bar" prices 2. On the subject of a less expensive second tasting I would s...

Being local (enough) but not that experienced with Madeira, I would be interested as well. Have time and can help with logistics if desired.
