Re: Source for Serra da Estrela cheese?

I have bought Serra da Estrela in the past from Artisanalcheese.com and had it shipped to me. Seemed to me to be the real thing, although more on the firmer side of the firm/gooey spectrum. It was quite good, and I found the source to be reliable, although expensive. Funny thing though, is now that ...

Re: Who is your favorite CA Cab producer (or two)?

Some favorites of mine: Ridge Montebello Dunn Howell Mountain Ch. Montelena Estate Neal Family Newer (to me at least) and in a bigger style: Mt Eden Estate (not very expensive as far as Cali Cab goes) Anderson's Conn Valley The Montebello is of course a blend (so maybe that dosent count?), and altho...

Re: Need New Movie + Video Suggestions

Hi Andy, hope all is well with you! I get some port drinking in now and then. Right now I have a 2000 Quinta do Canais open, and last night opened a couple of Douro reds (2005 Qunita do Crasto Reserva and 2006 Quinta do Vale Donna Maria) for Halloween guests. But the world of wine is big, and as I g...

Re: Need New Movie + Video Suggestions

The classic samurai films have been covered already (Seven Samurai, Cushingura, etc.), but here are a one older one and newer one that I have really enjoyed. Watch everything below in the original language with subtitles (my wife hates that, but it’s so much better)! Genre: Foreign, Japanese, Samura...

1966 Graham's Vintage Port

Grahams 1966 Vintage Port First bottle from a fresh case purchased at AIW around one month ago. Decanted around 6 PM and served at 8 PM Thanksgiving evening. Decanted very cleanly and a light pink to start with. Immediatly after decanting a little heat but the beauty of this port was already coming ...

1980 Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port

1980 Taylors: Decanted cleanly from a solid cork, lots of sediment. Translucent ruby color reminiscent of an older vintage. First sip (decanted 10 minutes): Not much aroma and a little rough with some heat. My initial impression is age like a 1970 but not as smooth. Decanted 2 hours: Much of the rou...

Re: What is the BEST vintage for Port in the past 15 years?

Yes, I do remember, and agree most will age quite well...the more I think about it in context of our recent tasting, the top ones certainly have the tannins and acidity to make the long haul. But somehow I still think of the 2000's as more balanced. The problem I have is that I was born in 1965, and...

Re: What is the BEST vintage for Port in the past 15 years?

I voted 2000, although I probably do not have enough experience observing ports mature to make a strong statement about it. I really enjoy the '94 vintage as a whole, but wonder where they will be a little down the road. I own a lot and will happily drink some of them now and believe that I will enj...

Re: What is the BEST vintage for Port in the past 15 years?

Maybe we should just refer to Fonseca and Taylor when it comes to defining a vintage? They are the two biggest and most consistent brands. Do you think Graham '77 and Graham '80 (for instance) are better than the worst Post War Taylor or Fonseca? If so, which Taylor or Fonseca vintages would those ...

I'm in, and can bring something or equivilent in cash. The first date would be tough, but probably the other three would work for me!

Re: The $ vs. the € & £ and their effect on Port buying strategy

It is amazing to me that we do not already have a viable third party here, composed of the more centrist parts of both republican and democratic parties. Leaving out the extremests on both sides of the gallery would result in a party that would win every election, and perhaps even result in a better...

Re: Other wine besides Port ...

Favorite single non-Portugal producer: Pride Mountain Vineyards Cab and merlot (regular botteling)

Favorite appellation: Bordeaux

I have restricted my favorite producer to wine I can afford to drink on a regular basis...I might pick something in Bordeaux if I could afford it regularly now.

Re: Cockburn Cellar, VNG

Very cool  Did you get to try one of those 55's (or '31)?

I just got a few Cockburn '55's for a decent price (I think, certainly the lowest I've ever seen them). Looking to taste one in Porto if I get the chance!

OK, I'll either rest or go out on my own during the day. For the evening, I'll be in my room or at th bar, look me up if you feel like going somewhere or just enjoying a glass or two at the bar.

I'm leaving Friday for a Saturday morning arrival. Not looking forward to the early morning Friday airport lines, but sure am looking forward to the trip!

Anyone else with a Saturday arrival looking for some casual Port House visits? Vinologia?

Re: #18 What is your favorite vintage of Quinta do Vesuvio VP

My favorite, by far, is the '94 (and I would even go so far as to say wine of the vintage, with the possible exception of Noval Nacional), and I also own two cases. Great to drink now, and great to drink later :D I have tried every single vintage, thanks to the '06 Harvest trip + a 6-pack of '05 I h...
