Re: What Port(s) have you purchased this week?

Taylor 2009 VP - 6 bottles at $51/ea - a screaming deal for this wine, especially considering that this was at our local grocery store.

Best CA Cabernet in recent memory

It's been a while since I visited this forum regularly - and in all honestly, we haven't been drinking much Port lately (buying, yes). What we have been drinking is big California - Oakville - cabernet sauvignons. There was a top-notch restaurant in Sacramento (our best shot at getting a Michelin st...

Re: First Pedro Ximenez

Phyllis and I have gotten into Pedro Ximenez over the last few years - I'm pretty sure it was Roy that first mentioned PX in some post on this forum years ago that piqued my interest. In fact, when I came lurking on the forums earlier tonight, I saw Roy's post about lurkers and then this one about P...

Re: FTLOP 9th Anniversary Party - Update 5/5

Roy - since we were too late to get an assured seat, we've gone ahead and spent our budget on other things. Please give our place in line to the next people and we'll try to make it up next year.

Re: What Port(s) have you purchased this week?

A Dow's Crusted Port (2003 bottling). I think this was the first time I've ever seen a crusted Port on a California retailers shelves (Corti Brothers, Sacramento).

Re: "Consumption pattern" revisited

Less, I'm sure. We really cut back our wine purchases and consumption in 2013 and into 2014. We got way ahead of ourselves in 2012 so we needed some time to let the budget catch up with the cellar...

Re: Your favorite LBV to date?

The '92 Smith Woodhouse that we had at the 2012 FTLOP anniversary gala. That LBV stood up alongside the Taylor and Fonseca 92 VPs and was even WOTN for at least one attendee. Only wish I could've gotten more of it at the time.

Re: FTLOP 9th Anniversary Party - Update 4/27

Roy, if there's still room, Phyllis and I would love to come up and see the WA gang and taste some delicious port. We have a couple 94's but we'll likely have to shop for something to bring.

Re: How long has it been since you've ordered Port in a restaurant?

Last night - a bottle of Fonseca 1963 VP. Good price, too (well below anything on wine-searcher - which was quite a nice surprise). Only downside - we didn't have time to decant it - but when we saw it on the menu, we immediately ordered the bottle and got it into decanter, so it had 4 hours of soak...

1963 Fonseca - purchased and consumed last night for Phyllis' birthday at Ella in Sacramento. This was our first 1963 - lovely, I must say.

Re: Decant time - 1961 Krohn Colheita

Final thoughts on this bottle - here it is, day 19, and the remain of the bottle have been simply sitting on our kitchen counter with a t-stopper in the bottle. Compared to the first couple of days, the fruit flavors are greatly diminished, with the nutty flavors coming to the forefront, and the hea...

Re: Febuary 2014 - Any 20 Year Old Tawny Port

I have been looking for a 20 year I've either not had in a long time or one I've never had. I've located a Quinta d. Ventozelo 20 year old. No I just need to head over to the store and see if they actually have it in stock. Did you find it? We've had a bottle or two of this over the past couple yea...

When was the Krohn bottled?
Hmm. Looks like my reply got lost somehow. It was bottled in 2006. We're drinking the last of it tonight - it's developed much more of the nutty flavors after being open for nearly a week. Still fruity too.

Re: Decant time - 1961 Krohn Colheita

In the end, we gave it about 2 hours in decanter, then back in bottle for another 2-3 hours before consuming it. This is the first Krohn colheita that we've opened. Two things that surprised me about it compared to other older colheitas that we've opened: 1. It was very cloudy - downright muddy even...

Re: Decant time - 1961 Krohn Colheita

Thanks, Glenn, err, Mr. Tawny. We were thinking something along those lines too. I don't know the bottling date off hand (bottle is in off-site storage right now), but I think it's early to mid 2000's.

Decant time - 1961 Krohn Colheita

We're thinking about opening a bottle of 1961 Krohn Porto Colheita tonight at the social gathering following a tasting of Burgundy wines from the 1960's at UC Davis (the star of the night is a 1962 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands Échezeaux). What decant time would you recommend for this colheita?...

Re: The next great 100 point dessert wine ...

I just got an offer for this in my email today - $119 for a 375. Other vintages (e.g. 2008) appear to be selling for $12 - $16 for a 375 - I can't imagine paying 8x the price just because WA gave this one 100 points - or is there something else that differentiates it from older wines with the exact ...

1x Dows, 1x Cockburn, 1x Vesuvio 2011 VP - all from Total Wine. We'll at least be able to do a 7-wide 2011 horizontal some year now :)

It would be fun, but Phyllis & I are going to have to pass. Hopefully we'll make it up for the FTLOP anniversary later in the year.
