Re: When do you drink Port?

I consider that the response of Madame Lily Bollinger, head of the Champagne House from 1941 to 1971, to a question from a journalist about how much she enjoyed her own product is equally applicable to Port. Her response was : "I drink it when I’m happy and when I’m sad. Sometimes I drink it wh...

A memorable obituary

Today's Times had an obituary of Major-General David Pank who died recently. Amongst a full account of his life there was the following lovely anecdote (which would date to the late fifties/early sixties) : 'While a young officer with 1st Battalion the King’s Shropshire Light Infantry in Germany, he...

Re: What to start on next ?

Thanks for all the advice. There seems to be quite a degree of consensus to start on the Cockburns and then the Dow 97 and possibly the Vesuvio. I will hang on to the 94s for another decade. Now all I need to do is work out how long I will keep. I guess that this is one of the drawbacks of off site ...

What to start on next ?

Most of my onsite storage is devoted to wine and I have limited long term storage for port. I currently have the following in off site storage and need to get some out of storage from amongst the following. In a sense they all need keeping for considerably longer, but now I'm collecting my pension I...

The old saying goes that a picture is worth a thousand words. Surely a thousand pictures merits more than one glass of port.

Re: POLL: Port Drinking Habits

I think that Madame Bollinger's famous quote on champagne is equally appropriate to port : “I only drink champagne when I'm happy and when I'm sad. Sometimes I drink it when I'm alone. When I have company I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I'm not in a hurry and drink it when I am, otherw...

Re: AVOIDANCE

Don't know that I agree with your assessment of the 1994's at this current time. Last month we had a blind tasting of 1994 VP's and I must say, nearly all of them showed up to their full potential at this stage (18 years old). Only one of them was "arguably" closed at the time. Long decan...

Are we going to get some notes or general comments on the '94s. I'd be most interested to know how they're progressing.

Re: 1979 Warre's Traditional Late Bottled Vintage 1984

Drank the first of these over the last two nights. Nose a little dull. Surprisingly dark in colour. Very sweet with chocolate dominating. A little one dimensional with not a lot of after taste. Second night had improved with greater complexity. Will try a longer initial decant for the next one. Over...

Re: 1979 Warre's Traditional Late Bottled Vintage 1984

I've bought the 7 bottles they (Lay & Wheeler) have (at least I think I have as their website still shows 7 bottles available). L&W no longer have a physical presence so delivery charges for this number of bottles are rather expensive. So I've put them with my other wines held in storage by ...

1979 Warre's Traditional Late Bottled Vintage 1984

A local wine merchant has a few bottles of this in his oddments list at £21.50 ($34). It seems a reasonable price for a well aged LBV. I've read Andy's tasting note from three years ago and wondered whether anyone has had this more recently or would have any views on its drinkability or price.

Re: Should "vintage port" be capitalized?

I don't think it is grammatically correct. Certainly the word vintage should not have a capital letter (the word capitalize does not mean to put into capital letters but rather to make use of or turn to one's advantage). There is an argument that as port is a contraction of Oporto it could have a ca...

Douro 2008

I attended the ‘2008 The New Douro’ arranged by Wine&Partners of Vienna at the Tate Modern in London last week. Although I've drunk port for the past 40 odd years, I have tried hardly any Douro table wines. This tasting was a great opportunity to correct that. Wines that stood out for me were (a...

Re: Sediment on Toast for Breakfast ...

Some years ago, at a tasting hosted by one of the Guimaraens family (I forget which ), he told a story about his days as a young man in the UK. Apparently they had a very good customer in the north of England, a lady who regularly bought vintage port. He felt he really ought to go and see her. He fo...
