Re: 1977 Dow's Vintage Port

Thanks for the note Andy. Roy, I love this wine as well but have had some vegetal bottles. And just some 'off' bottles.

Re: 1991 Quinta do Noval

This wine was a little better than I remembered. The most amazing thing about this is that I am drinking port in the middle of a 300 mile week (although today is a recovery day). I never hear about the 91's or 92's. I have a bit of both vintages, but do not taste them regularly. I remember the 91 Gr...

1991 Quinta do Noval Vintage Port

Decanted around 2 pm. Tasted around 10 pm Medium depth, garnet color with a light brick rim. Pronounced, maturing aromas of raisins, prunes, anise maybe a touch of cranberry, candied red fruits. A touch of oxidation showing after a few hours. Sweet, medium full body. Low acidity, and low, almost tot...

Re: Anyone ever try a 1991 Quinta do Noval VP??

Andy, I bought a case of this on release. I tasted a bottle a few years ago (most likely in 2001 or 2002) to check it out. I have looked everywhere for my notes and cannot find them. But I do remember it being on the light side, not too concentrated, early maturing type port. Not very impressed. I w...

Thanks for the good note. I bought a few bottles of this right after its release. I guess I have forgotten about it. Need to taste soon.

Re: Do you admit that you can enjoy a young VP, too?

Depends on my mood, or my desire. I love young ports. And mature ones too of course.

Re: Having any Port this weekend?

Andy, I race cat 4 cyclocross and road. Hard to upgrade when you have a 3 year old and a wife that races (she was 2007 Tennessee State Masters Triathlon Champion). But I can dream. My season starts the first weekend in May, and goes through the cyclocross season which just ended here. One reason we ...

Re: Having any Port this weekend?

Andy,

Second race of the year? Wow, our road season here does not begin until around the first of May. Today, 35 and windy, 2 hours was all I could take.

Michael

PS how did you do?

1982 Dows Colheita Port

Had this last night, poped and poured. Bright, medium bronze copper color. Pronounced, nutty caramel, and citrusy aromas. Sweet, balanced acidity with low tannin full body. Very simple on the palate. Not much complexity at all. Disappointing for the price.

Thanks all. I believe it to be a Bual, when I tasted it the first time a few years ago. I have one bottle left, most likely will drink soon.

Re: Douro Wine discussion point

Not much here in the Nashville area. Crasto is well over 20 a bottle. Roriz makes a very good wine from a round 15 a bottle. Douro reds are a hard sell.

Re: Champalimaud Quinta do Cotto 1989

Found my notes from Jan. 2001. From half bottle. Very heavy sediment when decanted. Clear, medium deep, garnet-purple color with a maturing lighter reddish rim. Clean, medium pronounced, developing aromas of dusty plums, raisins, leather and sweet chocolate. Sweet, balanced acidity, and smooth, low ...

Re: Champalimaud Quinta do Cotto 1989

I have had this in half bottle as well and thought that they were good. Well made port. Probably a one off. I have never heard of any other vintages from this guy that have been reviewed, or tasted by anyone. The half bottles of 1989 are all I have ever seen.

Re: 1977 Dow's Vintage Port

Very interesting, as I was moving my cellar from one house to another a couple of weeks ago I noticed about half on my 77 Taylors had been leaking. I have not had one in a while. I need to have an emergency tasting.

Like I said before, this is the only dry wine from Niepoort that I have tasted. I wish I could compare. BTW, I am moving my wine cellar and saw all my Nacional this afternoon. Holy s--t, I was drooling. It has been a while.

Re: Niepoort Charme 2005

I think people expect something from a typical Douro red; robust, tannic wines with a certain rusticity. And when someone makes a wine like the 2005 Charme with finesse and elegance it throws everyone for a loop. It has the aromatics of a typical Douro red, but on the palate it is smooth, medium bod...
