Re: Diabetes

Roy, sorry I missed your post in March. Please note also Julian sent me a PM to say he had posted yesterday’s response, and as on a previous occasion the notification via email had a blank space instead of the link. Both messages appeared OK in my box on the site so they are not missed. Apologies ab...

Re: Want to Retire in Portugal?

I would not spend the $249. It is a sales pitch and nothing more. You can find out as much as you need to know in general terms from the internet. For specific information about your individual situation you need specific legal advice. There are "golden passport" opportunities and my faile...

Re: Azores Airlines / SATA

Have you considered flying to Lisbon and then back to the Azores? I have done extensive searches recently because we accepted an offer for our quinta and began to line up a visit to Pico (our first choice of island to which to retire) to view properties. Earlier this week the buyer pulled out (he is...

Re: Diabetes

I thought it was time to update this with my one person clinical trial. First, more personal information. My opening post describes the problems I do not have. I do not drink socially because my wife and I never go out socialising. When we were young we did do so, but not for about 30 years now. We ...

Diabetes

I am home a few days after 28 in hospitals. Short story - blackouts, new heart valve and triple bypass. Op successful and I feel great. A few days after admission and numerous tests I was a bit of a query because I have never smoked, do not have hypertension, diabetes, a cholesterol problem and am n...

Re: What Douro wine have you purchased this week...

I did not pay for them, but received a belated birthday present from my son today – a mixed case (and I think mixed quality) of 11 reds and one white. Three of the reds are French, but I wondered if anyone has knowledge of the specific Portuguese wines. With the exception of the first on the list an...

Re: What have you opened this week?

My last bottle of VP. Nothing spectacular, a Borges 2004. When my son last visited I decided to transfer my VPs to the section of the cellar for him and his two children. He did the choosing but insisted I kept one bottle. We have now drunk it. As we have aged (now 75 and 70 respectively) my wife an...

Re: The Influx and Increased Global Popularity of Nata

My wife and I tried them when we first moved here - revoltingly sweet. All of the Portuguese "with coffee" pastries are. We honestly cannot understand how anyone enjoys them, but as with wine, nobody can tell you that how you perceive the taste is wrong.

Re: Are you thinking of retiring to Portugal?

Hi Alan, sorry - I absolutely didn't want to insult you. Again, Alan, I totally didn't want to insult you. I love the fact that you built up the farm in Portugal and I absolutely get why you plan to move. If I would be 25 years younger I would give the olive business a try... so again, I hope you f...

Re: Are you thinking of retiring to Portugal?

Would owning a medium size olive vineyard (or any other crop) generate enough profit to live a modest but comfortable lifestyle there? Farming is not a way to make a living, but a way of living. A lot depends on what you mean by “medium size” and how much you think you need for a modest comfortable...

Re: Are you thinking of retiring to Portugal?

i'd go for right next to Bomfim. right in the middle [dance2.gif] If I had 2.2M Euros, I wouldn't need to retire in Portugal! That sentence might be true... however, in my case it will be followed by the sentence "Even if I would win the Mega Million Jackpot I still would WANT to retire in Por...

Re: Cellaring Moscatel de Setúbal

Any experience on how these age in the bottle? Extremely variable, between vintages as well as between producers. I have been drinking down my cellar for about four months - we are on the market in the hope of retiring to the Azores and are not intending moving any wine. My son and grandchildren be...

Cellaring Moscatel de Setúbal

Does anybody else cellar Moscatels?

I do not have many and the oldest are 1981 Palmelas, followed by a few from early 2000s to the present. I also have some Samos (Greece) and Spanish moscatels, again from this century.

Re: Portuguese Wine Dinner With Broadbent Selections Quinta do Crasto & Casa Ferreirinha

I would have liked to go to that. Knowing what I spend on our extremely rare nights out, the price of $115 seems very reasonable to me - is it? I particularly noted that Stilton was served with the Port. That is indeed a "marriage made in heaven" and for anyone who has not tried Stilton (w...

Re: Are you thinking of retiring to Portugal?

Alan, America isn't perfect and yes we do have murders but people fail to grasp just how big we are compared to other countries. The odds of someone being a victim of a major crime here is quite low. Here's some stats so you know. Portugal is approximately 92,090 sq km, while United States is appro...

Re: Are you thinking of retiring to Portugal?

Moving around the world is easy. We have owned farms in England (2), Australia, Scotland and Portugal. Admittedly, being British the UK is no problem, but we were foreigners in Australia as we are here. We move only personal effects, not large items of furniture. You could start with a Portuguese co...

Re: Are you thinking of retiring to Portugal?

At the weekend, and from two different sources, I heard of two U.S. families that have moved to Portugal. Is it in fact becoming a trend? I know this country is extremely safe and has a very low cost of living, not to mention the reason for this forum, but considering I speak to so few people, I fou...
