Re: The Influx and Increased Global Popularity of Nata

I find them too sweet and heavy, my stomach isn’t happy afterwards.

However, this past trip I stopped at the famous shop in Belém, and what a difference. Fresh from the oven, and somehow much lighter and fluffier. I thoroughly enjoyed two of them with espresso.

Re: H&H Garrafeira Collection

An update to my ’mystery’. Visited H&H during the latest Fortification Tour. I told our host about my bottle - he said that H&H does not hold back bottles, but ships them right out. The older bottles being poured did not have bottling dates, so the conversation ended there. Later on I bought...

Bought a 1971 Dalva Golden White Colheita at a Continente super market in Lisbon.

I love Portugal.

Re: What have you opened this week?

1962 Maynard's Colheita.
Bought at their 'company store' in Porto last year.
Very rich, cocoa and caramel, nice acid.

Re: Minors drinking Port

I encouraged my daughter to ‘nose’ spirits and wine from a young age and give her impressions. As an adult she enjoys every day wine and beer, but is a good judge of higher end pours. I often ask her to nose something for me when I’m writing tasting notes and can’t quite identify an aroma. I once to...

These sound fantastic.

Unfortunate that they are priced at 2X similar products from Kopke, Taylor, etc.

Re: What Madeira(s) Have You Purchased Recently?

Justinos Malvazia Colheita 1997 and Justinos 10 year Boal.. I bought many of the Malvazia since the new first-time importer must have calculated a very wrong price. Note high alcoholic taxes in this country and 25 % VAT.... Other comparable madeiras cost double of this Justinos Malvazia here. I dri...

Re: First visit to Porto, Douro Valley & Lisbon

I took two bottle carriers on my last trip to Portugal. One was a ‘Wine Check’ bag, mentioned above. It is a cube shaped padded bag with wheels and a strap. It can be flattened out somewhat and brought along in your suitcase. It is meant to hold a 12 bottle styrofoam shipper you pick up on-site. I’v...

Re: White tawny - what should I be trying?

It sounds as though our tastes with older sweet whites might be quite similar ... I prefer the sweet old whites with a good balance between the sweetness and the acidity, with good intensity, complexity and length. Hi Phil, Very well stated. Sounds like our taste in whites is indeed quite similar, ...

Re: White tawny - what should I be trying?

Kopke has a range of whites starting with 10 years. Kopke 30 yrs white is very good. There is a smaller quinta in Douro which is getting more and more respect for their aged whites, and that is Quinta das Lamelas. They have 10 + 20 + 30 + 40 years white. All in 50 cl bottles. Of these 30 years are ...

White tawny - what should I be trying?

I’ve been trying to wrap my head around white port lately. I enjoy it, but am rarely impressed. The few 10 and 20 year olds that can be easily found tend to be light and uninspiring. Leonardo 50 and 90 are indeed spectacular, but too pricy for more than an occasional treat. The Leonardo 20 white was...

Re: Has anyone else seen this Douro aerial photo book?

I was poking around online when I saw this Douro book that I had never seen before. The book is "DOURO - Patrimonio Mundial - Fotographia Aerea". The price was low, so I ordered it. It arrived today and I was blown away! The entire book is of aerial photographs of the Douro demarcated reg...

Re: Tedo's Tawny Ports

We visited Quinta do Tedo during the 2017 Harvest Tour. I very much enjoyed all the wines poured for us. Thought they were on the pricey side though. They offered direct shipping to the U.S. at the time, have they expanded proper distribution in the U.S. at all? (which might provide a better price p...

Re: Old White Port Tasting - you may need use a translation program

That sounds like a fine time indeed! Google Chrome did a decent job auto-translating the page to English. I wish I could find more well aged whites to enjoy. I love love love the Leonardo 20yo, but it is nearly impossible to find. (The 50, 60, 90's are incredible too, but $$$). The younger whites I'...
