I grew up in a Portuguese neighborhood, called "Portuguesville". Everybody in my town is from the Azores or mainland and all things Portuguese are cherished, including linguica and of course Port  As for wine, most people were drinking Lancers or Maetus... Port on the other hand, tawn...

No Ferreira or Ramos Pinto? Both have great wine and port, long history, and values on the high and low ends. I had a Ramos Pinto estate bottled red last night (for the first time) and for $12.00 USD, that is a hard bottle to beat from any region. I'll throw Ferreira out there on my list of best shi...

Cockburn's LBV is filtered? Will have to re-read the bottle. I just picked it up out of curiosity. Will tell you straight up what I think. Then again, we're Grahams fans here in the USA... Finished the 1995 Warre's LBV last night and it was great. Strong chocolate taste with a touch of toffee. Not m...

I just looked at the bottle and it's a '99 Cockburn's LBV. I guess I'll just open it rather than aging it and being disappointed in 10 years. At $13.00 USD, I wasn't expecting the world.

Another nice thing is that with the Ah-So you can also get a Cork back inside.
A screw is the best, no pun intended...

Ronald Wortel wrote:Moses, I'm a big fan of Niepoort LBV's, but the '99 wasn't one to remember IMO.
I would've taken the 96 if they had it.

Anyone try the Cockburn's LBV before?

How is the Niepoort 1999 LBV? I just picked up 4 bottles and was hoping to age them; well 3 of them for sure.

I picked up a Cockburn's 2000 LBV also. I have never seen one before.

A local B&M has the 1995 Warre's LBV for $21.00 USD. I picked one up two days ago and tried it. I needs to open up a lot. I think tonight will be the night for it. I left it open for 12 hours. The store has about 10 bottles left (on the Clearence Rack).

I have really enjoyed a Noval (not so much a less house, I know) and another that I can't currently remember. The Noval has been my favorite so far. It has more body than most of the others I have tried, and seems like it could develop into a classic the most out the usual players in the Boston mar...

Come to Boston and we'll treat to as much Ferreira as you can handle

The LBV is a great value. A touch below Warres & Dow in quality, yet has a distinctive taste that is quite nice.

Happened to Me

A couple of years ago, thieves broke into my parents' house (while they live in Mexico for the winter) and stole all my loose bottles of Port, luckily he did not start opening wooden crates. About 15 or so bottles were taken in all. The police gave me special service as I thought the thieves stole s...

Moses Don't forget you need to sterilize everything before you start decanting and bottling and the corks are much easier to deal with if you boil them and hammer them into the bottles while they are still hot and soft. Alex I'll play around with some empty bottles and regular corks then! I like th...

I looked at couple of corking supply sites and emailed them as towards which cork I should buy. No response yet. Harpoon Beer Brewery is down the street from my work and I could ask them to help me out. I think they would do it out of curiousity.

So mesure the size of the hole of the bottle you have and add that measure. Do you have the machine to compress the cork and drive it in the bottle? I was going to use a mallet, but have not read further on how to cork something. I know that the port bottle corks look thinner than red wine corks. I...

Back to business. Currently enjoying Warre's Otima's 10 year old tawny - although a bit early for tawny, but nonetheless I look forward to the daffodils blossoming, the time of spring. Curious as to why you think it's a bit early for a 10 year? Do you mean it's too early in the year to drink tawny'...

In response to Moses Botbol, we have a 1990 Cuvee Dom Perignon in our cellar (purchased 14 years ago). Should we sell it now or hold onto it? We're not really champagne enthusiasts. My reply is similar to Roy's. You should never sell anything unless: A. That was your intent (to resell) when you ori...
