2002 Croft Quinta da Roeda SQVP
Decanted for 4 hours (Lots of thick sediment) Colour. Reminds me of Valpolicella Ripasso, I was going to call it to clear to 15+mm, but holding it up to the light, it's clear through the glass. Nose. Amazing spiced fruit/mulled wine notes. Floral notes filling the room. Just like the last time I had...

Re: Rating SQVP vs fully declared
As Moses said, you judge a port on it's merits. If you take the literal definition of what it means to be a Single Quinta Port, there are some that more than hold their own. Quinta do Noval and indeed the Nacional are both Single Quinta ports if you are using the literal definition. Many, if not mo...

Rating SQVP vs fully declared
I'm curious, when rating a port and listing tasting notes, when rated out of 100, are people more likely to be forgiving to a SQVP and less forgiving to a VP in their score? Personally, I rate them on the same out of 100 scale, I was just curious how others approached the difference. For me, on a li...

1996 Taylor's Quinta de Vargellas
I've heard half bottles can age quicker than full bottles, but this is the first time I've noticed a real difference. I opened a half bottle of Quinta de Vargellas today, as I understand it was harvested later in the season, as the best SQVPs of the year were. Only needed an hour in the decanter, op...

Re: 2000 Cockburn's Vintage Port
Excellent note. Do you think it was starting to slightly morph into some secondary flavors given that is nearing 16 years old? It was very definitely developing secondary flavours, but what really stuck me was how developed it was for the age, given another 4 or 5 years and I think it will show ext...

2000 Cockburn's Vintage Port
2000 Cockburn's Vintage Port (Pre Symington takeover, made during Sogrape ownership as far as I can tell) Opened at home with family for my birthday. Decanted for 5 hours. A lot of very fine sediment, needed cheesecloth. Colour : Maroon. Surprisingly light for age, looks far more mature than expecte...

2002 Croft Quinta da Roeda Vintage Port
Croft Quinta da Roeda 2002 Opened at home with family. Decanted for 6 hours (Lots of sediment, obviously well cellared) Colour: Definitely some lightening during maturing, dark but nice and clear. Re: Advice on first serious bottle of port?
Thanks for all the tips and suggestions :) I get my shopping delivered due to chronic illness, (Back problems, slipped discs, ruptured discs, not nice). I've just found out that my online shopping retailer has Sanderman Vau 2003 at £22, pretty fair price actually. Also, they doing an offer on Taylor...

Re: Advice on first serious bottle of port?
Taylor's LBVs are really good. I really enjoyed the 2003 and used it for a couple of years as my cellar defender. I only have one bottle left now, and it's probably long past time to drink it in its prime (Taylor's LBVs are filtered, so don't really improve with age in the bottle), but I just can't...

Re: Advice on first serious bottle of port?
But now, it's gone :( How on earth do you manage to cope when the last drop has gone? Any advice? LOL ;) So, what bottle next I wonder. So many ports, so many vintages, such a large world to explore. It's so exciting! Have a second bottle on hand "just in case." Having a spare 20-yr...

Taylor's 1985 VP bought in UK
75cl bottle. Amazing colour, medium to light ruby. Looked like I imagined a mature vintage port to look like. Took 5 hours of decanting to open up, but once open lovely gentle fruit with hints of spice on the nose, along with moderate hit of spirit. Very soft on the palate, gentle at first then chan...

Re: Advice on first serious bottle of port?
Well, I opened it last night, with my Dad and brother to share with. Wow! Seriously, wow. I had no idea wine could taste that good. It was a lovely medium ruby colour and I tasted it every hour, until hour 5, which was the magic number, it suddenly opened up. It was like sipping manna from heaven, I...

Re: Advice on first serious bottle of port?
Congratulations! You've officially become hooked like the rest of us here :-). A couple thoughts: -Try a bit right when you open and decant, and then every couple hours or so. You should notice a change over that time that should serve as a nifty learning experience into what one can expect decanti...

Advice on first serious bottle of port?
Hi everyone! I've dabbled with reserve rubies, 10 year tawnys, filtered LBVs and a crusted port, but I've just bought my first serious bottle, Taylors 1985 (Picked from a combination of reviews and tasting notes and a special offer). 75cl bottle. I got myself a proper waiter's style cork screw, a fu...
