Drinking Port in Portugaul October 2025

Hello, Here is my not so brief write up about drinking port in early October 2025. I had plans of being concise, but I just can’t find a way todo that, and be thorough. My “tasting notes” went into three different notebooks, and some email drafts based on the day, and amount of time or space I had t...

Re: Event: 2022 PORT HARVEST TOUR

I can't even begin to describe how much I want to go on the next one of these. Where can I find the beginners guide about PORT HARVEST TOURs? I found these notes because someone gave me a taste of the DR Port 20 year Tawny, and I finally figured out how to search for it on this site. Agri-Roncão is ...

Re: For those NEW to Port collecting and consumption ...

My first Port was a ruby port still in a paper bag while camping with friends back in the mid 90's. I was not a fan. At some point around 2010 I was introduced to a 1984 Warres Vintage port. It was a long slow evening with a glass of port every 90 minutes so we could observe the effect of oxidizatio...

Re: planning 1 Day in Vila Nova de Gaia, going solo

Thanks again everyone! I have booked some tours (Poccas, Ramos Pinto), and plan to hit Bachas Vini and the Garrafeira Nacional. I was debating booking one more at Calem Caves, for a Tawney vertical, or a return to Quevedo. I notice none of you recommended Calem, and I have tried some of their port i...

Shipping Port to USA vs in luggage

Hello, More questions as I plan my upcoming trip. I am hoping one of you can suggest a simple solution for my puzzle. It has been suggested that shipping port home may be better then buying a bag in Portugal, and taking it home with me on the airplane, as the rules of what you can bring home with yo...

Day trip to the Douro by train

Hello, My mom and I, and maybe one or two other retired travelers would like to take a train from Porto into the Douro valley this October. What do you recommend? what are some must do activities? How do you get from the train station to the wineries? Where should we eat lunch? Is "Pinhão"...

Re: planning 1 Day in Vila Nova de Gaia, going solo

Thanks Al! and everyone else :D Ok, So I met someone IRL, who haunts these forums. I forget her name, since it was about a year ago... a :salute: She said that according to some of you, the best value per dollar of port was a crusted port. Is there a great way to try a variety of crusted ports in VN...

Re: When was the last time you visited the Douro Valley?

June 2022 was my first time.

I hope to get there for a day this October.
And I hope to join a friend for his "50th birthday trip to Portugal"

My wife is more interested in a variety of vacation locations, so I'll be lucky to go there 3 times.

planning 1 Day in Vila Nova de Gaia, going solo

Hello everyone, I'm excited to be going back to Portugal in early October, and I have one full day alone in VndG to plan for ( about noon until noon). When I searched this site as part of my research, I discovered that most of the recommendations are more than 10 years old, with rare exceptions, lik...

Re: Portugal was wonderful

On Saturday June 18th was our paid tour of the Douro valley. Certainly out of our normal price range but our tour guide actually arranged a once in a lifetime tasting. I hope to type in more about this tour at length sometime next week :) Torvent is a small operation, with two tour guides, one of th...

Re: Portugal was wonderful

Port Tasting Number 3. Kopke tastings. I went here to get a very old port, and succeeded. My wife and friends came with me, and we spent a lot of money. I want to buy more from them someday since everything we had was so good.... but then everything we had is out of my price range for normal living,...

Re: Portugal was wonderful

Nice review. Ferreira is a very good place to visit so glad you enjoyed it. And may I add, you’re a tough scorer…I like it! Can’t wait to hear more… I obviously don't know the 2nd thing about scoring. So I made something up during this trip. Normally during one of my tastings each port is discussed...

Re: Portugal was wonderful

Port Tasting Number 2. Quevedo: I hope to spend quite a few words explaining how awesome this port is, and what an amazing job Frédérick does. My expectations: I was not entirely sure what to expect with this visit to the Quevedo tasting room.   I knew I could taste good ports, get advise and knowle...

Re: Portugal was wonderful

Port Tasting 1. Caves Ferreira: highly recommended. We are all fans now. I planned this tour so we could all see how port is aged in Villa Nova De Gaia, and have some basic ports to show us more economic, and standardized ports. It also seemed more interesting as it focused on Dona Antónia, and not ...

Portugal was wonderful

Hello everyone, My celebration trip to Portugal was wonderful. Thank you all for your advice, it certainly helped. I will start with an overview and if people have questions I will fill in some details. I also hope to add some port notes, and some reviews of the quintas and other places we visited. ...

Re: Looking for once in a lifetime tastings in Portugal

Thanks so much everyone. We are customizing a tour of the Douro Valley, and I have no concept of how good a proposal this is. Many of the Douro Valley tours include a boat ride, and this one does not. Is that a loss? Anyone here want to review these locations (good views?) and port houses? - wine ta...

Looking for once in a lifetime tastings in Portugal

Hello everyone, I am dragging my wife to Portugal in March 2022, to taste ports in honor of my 50th birthday. Ideally we can travel for 10 or 11 days. I have friends that meeting us wherever I tell them too, so that they can join us for the "port tastings" part of the vacation, ideally a t...
