2002 Calem Vintage Port

Calem 2002. Decanted the previous evening. It was Purple. Deep Purple. It smelt of blackcurrant mixed with an unpleasant stale alcohol.(I'm not trying to be funny Roy, thats all it was!) It tasted unpleasant. Just about drinkable. It doesn't join the Fonseca 2000 as the only Port I couldn't drink. R...

Re: Warre's "Otima" 10 year Tawny

Just for an opposing view, I think the 10yr old is gorgeous, for what it is. A mouth-feel that rivals a good VP. A nutty creaminess that allows folk to start to understand Tawny's. It's not impressively cultured or structured, but it's really cheap. It takes all sorts to make the World go round. Alan

Yea...now if they could just translate that into a zombie theme...thousands of Cuban zombies 100 yards from where Jack is having breakfast...I can see it now  Jay Hi Jay , that made me laugh out loud. Good one. In a pathetically serious response, my liberal friend, it was Movie Escapism and E...

Re: Your favorite movie(s) of all time?

Talking of Jackie, how good was he in 'A few Good Men' ? He stole the film from the pretty people, Demi Moore and Tom Cruise. That 5 minute speech in Court at the end, when I presume your supposed to think he's the bad guy? Awesome. He spoke for me....

Re: Boxing Fans are you excited for tonight?

I watched it. I suspect it's Calzaghe's swan song. He on;y sneaked this one on the punches thrown/aggressor rule. Not his best performance, and it could have easily gone the other way. Hopkins is a loud mouth journeyman now. We have a decent heavyweight on the way, David Haye but at that level, one ...

Re: What/where is the best meal you've ever had in Portugal?

Roy , In one sense your humour is spot on. But in another, if we had half a dozen Oporto folk on here, I bet they'd get it, it was so full of locals, and of course 3 different, unconnected people all recommended it as were the locals eat. Even if they didn't, I bet they would know that dish they we...

Re: What/where is the best meal you've ever had in Portugal?

I engaged with a few barmaids and taxi drivers on the quintisential Portuguese restaurant in Oporto, where all the locals flock. We were told a venue, and off we went into the night. Turned up about 5 miles away from the tourist part, and sure enough, it was chocker-block with families, we were clea...

Re: Visiting the UK

I know I'm over here (UK) to begin with, but I'll chip in anyway... I'd love to go to a Tasting where there were loads of 40's and 50's, particularly the Big Guns, Fonseca, Cockburn, Graham, Taylor, etc. Although I love to selfishly appreciate a bottle or two, on my own, or with a friend, I feel you...

Re: #11 What is your favorite vintage of Martinez VP?

As mentioned, I adored the Harveys 85, and it is now a blind spot for me. What I would say is dont try drinking it for at least 6 hours, and maybe even longer. It at first smells flat and taste almost 'soily', but when it opens up it is light and complex, with a mouthfeel to die for. I've two left, ...

The Scots nearly did the same with the Highland Games! Sadly they were instinctively persuaded by the cost of hiring the open field!

Roy,

As I suspected, no clear answer as to origin. Have you had any luck elsewhere? Or are you going to have to go with my generalised version?

I've enjoyed reading all the huffing and puffing.

And when you all finish...the real market will decide. Sadly it will not be influenced in the slightest by all the previous Posts.

Mr Angry from Tunbridge Wells, will be delighted or incandescent, but never an influence of note.

Roy , I hope you find an interesting answer, but I suspect you wont. To me the 'tradition' is somewhat mundane and goes back to Victorian Britain. Fine dining, which people aspired to was quite formalised. At the end of a meal, there were a few ways you could go to end it. Port was with dessert or ...

I've never understood how they could have survived so long, being so uncompetitive and restrictive in such a highly developed and modern Country.
