Re: 1992 Niepoort Vintage Port

We are frozen in here, expecting 6 degrees tonight. I opened a bottle of this 1992 Niepoort. Upon opening lots of ripe , dark berry , fruit, not too hot. 8 hours later no heat, nice fruit, nice bouquet, nice spicy notes, great finish. You must have had a flawed bottle. :(

Re: 1992 Niepoort Vintage Port

I bought a case of this from Rare Wine Company in the 90's for my son's birth year. We have opened one or two bottles wich have been very good. It might be time to open one to see how it is doing.

Port Weather for Super Bowl In DFW

It is a frigid 9 degrees or less here tonight but we have our first Super Bowl here in my area. I am having some fine Dow Ruby NV which is a very nice port , sitting by the fire. The schools are closed. The roads are treacherous but we expect the temps to be in the 60's by Super Bowl Sunday. I have ...

I have bought a case of Taylor 92 that had six bottles--magnums!
Is it possibly a case of magnums?

Re: Got responsibility / need guidance / 1985 Offley Vintage

The bottles are probably okay , even those with slight leakage. This is not one of the top houses for 1985. I have drunk some of it but I don't have any tasting notes. I have drunk all I had in my collection a few years ago. My memory seems to tell me 88-90. It is a decent enough port and should sho...

Re: Blind Tasting

To refine tasting skills, blind tasting is a must. I attend several per year. It helps develop palate memory. I think that having too many wines at one time is a mistake as the taste buds have a harder time distinguishing the wines. I think if you opened 3 ports with a group and say you had 77, 85, ...

Re: 2008 The Pines Sweet Sierra port -- by Medici

Just a real question, not implying anything, but I thought we could not post on "port style" wines on the BB? I have refrained from questions and tasting notes on such things as Heitz Ink Grade or the Australians. I hope this means that the "rule" is relaxed or that I have misund...

Re: 1998 Fonseca Guimaraens Vintage Port

We bought a lot of this for our son's birth year. Glad we have it but I give it 86-88. We paid $12 for the 375 and $20 for the 750. Not Fonseca's best effort. I place it equal with the better NV's such as Warre's Warrior etc. I gave it higher on previous posts but recent bottles have not been up to ...

Re: 2000 Quinto de Vesuvio

As noted in the thread on port tasting groups, I attend a Wednesday group. I am not sure when the waiter pulls the cork but proabbly around 10:30 and we serve dessert about 1:30. I can try to decant it myself but I deliver it the day before. 24 hours seems too long, but we are really not set up perf...

Re: 1970 or 1977, which do you prefer and why?

Cellartracker tells me I have 10 bottles of each vintage. This is also a tie for me as to my favorite of the vintages. I like Graham and Taylor 70 but I like Taylor and Graham 77. SO--I refuse to choose! [foilhat.gif]

Just over 2 hours. I was relying on someone else to bring it and they got it there a little late.Still, it was quite good. I think I bought this on your recommendation Roy a couple of years ago.

Re: Tell us about your local Port tasting group

As I have mentioned here before, I attend two blind tasting groups. One is a group that has met at the Fort Worth Club every Wednesday at lunch for about 40 years. I would say 50% of the desert wines provided by the weekly host ( we take turns) are ports. The other group meets 1st and 3rd Fridays fo...

Re: 1967 Taylor Quinta de Vargellas Vintage Port

I opened a bottle of this for our Friday blind tasting group, yesterday. It was a nice, smooth port. Seemed younger than 1967. Nice fruit, mint on the nose. Medium ruby color. Smooth mouth entry, just a little pleasant heat. Smooth finish, not complex 91 points.

Re: 1992 Smith Woodhouse LBV Port

I opened a bottle of this last week, on my birthday Dec 29. I have similar thoughts on the notes as yours. Nice mint on the bouquet. Good finish. About the same points. I might say 89. It was better after 24 hours.

Re: Drinking Port in hot weather

I am not sure what is triggered in the human psyche when the weather finally gives a chill to the air and we call it port drinking weather, but if you are indoors in room temperature from 65-75 degrees, and the port is 60 to 70 ( All F't) it really makes no difference. I dirnk less port in the hot w...
