Open 3 Years and still tasty

Tasting with a Distributor here in Anchorage, the Rep pulled out a Ramos Pinto 10 yr tawny Quinta Ervamoira that was still not only drinkable, but down right tasty. This old one was even preferred by a veteran taster among three of us. I found the only difference to be was that the 3 yr opened one h...

Re: Horisontal vs. Vertical Port Tastings, which do you prefer?

gosh, I've had a ton of fun with both, but I'd have to say I slightly prefer verticals. Of course horizontals are an awesome way for me to really begin to distinguish among different producers......so, I might say they both are really fun AND eductional.

Re: What is the oldest bottle in your collection?

oldest....I reckon that'd be the Porta rocha 150 yr tawny blend, which contains a blend of 5 tawnies between 100 & 150 yrs of age if I'm remembering correctly. Next would be two 1939 Royal Opporto Colheitas, followed by a '55 Taylor VP as my oldest VP.

Re: Cold weather is running out ... April is 1/2 over ...

Tis true for me....I drink a bt less in the summer only because by the time I get indoors in the long days of our Alaskan summer it is near 11 PM....so I just mearly have less time each evening to drink Port. But heading into summer, i do have quite a few VP's standing on death row, principal among ...

Re: #12 What is your favorite vintage of Smith Woodhouse VP?

hmmm, while I've had a few SW VP's out and about...i can't recall favs. Recently their 94 LBV became a fav of mine and several friends whom I served it too, even a non port drinker/liker. It was very approachable, & enjoyable with pretty velvity tannins.

Re: Besides Port, what is your favorite wine type or region?

So I dug back a bit to my previous cellar holdings post. It is below. Probly not changed too much numbers-wise....maybe nix a few of the older bottlings and add a few newer ones. I'd say if anything since this post a year ago I have been in a Rhone drinking phase a bit this winter (with the Northen ...

Re: Do you use cheesecloth or other filter inside your funnel?

Just a pretty fine screen mesh that came with my funnel with a light to watch for sediment generally. I do add cheesecloth for older Ports or those I know to throw a particularly high level of sediment.

Darn, this 'was" my first house VP some years back when i scored a case for a really decent price. Sadly, I didn't have alot of other ready VP those years, so they went rather quickly. Loved it then and after reading this tasting note, I wish I had more!

Re: Filling in bottles in collection

So most of the bottles (but not all) make the display kinda spur of the moment, as i just fill in empty shelf space on my daily drinking wine rack in the dining room, or a living room shelf, or along the wall in my cellar. They were drunk on a special occassion with great company and often I just ri...

Re: Do you prefer Tawny or Ruby Style of Port

At entry level, I much prefer the Standard Tawny to a Ruby, and at a notch above have no clear preference between Colheitas and LBV's. However, at the top end I much prefer a Vintage to a 40yr Tawny Tom Okay, I want to ammend my original answer of 50-50 with the button ultimately pushed towards taw...
