Re: What would you like your more basic Ports to be closed with?

My major reason is that I have more confidence in lying down screw capped bottles in the fridge than I do for T Corks. Many of the fortified wines in Australia are screwcapped, although it is lesser percentage than the table wines. I'd wouldn't mind seeing high end ports under screwcap as well, at l...

Just listened to it, thanks for the heads up! He touched on some very interesting points, such as why TFP doesn't plan on getting into table reds, what his predecessors at the company were like, his thoughts on where the industry is heading and his thoughts on Terra Feita v. Vargellas. +1 good list...

good to know! i've never heard of her. according to the description on Amazon.com she also hosted a PBS show on wine tasting. neat! Jancis is an English critic and an MW. For where I am in Australia, I'd say that she is probably the best known international critic. Perhaps, most importantly, she ha...

Re: Port CEO calls on wine industry to put aside rivalry and cooperate

A lot could be learned from the craft beer industry. It isn't quite as nice as as say five or ten years ago, but there is still plenty of collaboration, established breweries helping start-ups, etc. I know of many local examples, and while I don't love a lot of Sam Adams beers, I still drink some o...

There is so much I just don't get to see, but based on what I have had -
1) Grahams
2) Kopke
3) Noval
I might give you a different answer tomorrow though

Re: What's going on with Taylor's 1994?

Forget the Taylor's 1994 What the hell is going on with the Penfolds 03 Grange? 03 was not a stellar vintage (unlike 01 and 02). The Vintage chart I looked up said you have to go back to 1974 to find a worse rated Grange. Anyway, back to the Taylor's.... I think part of it has to do with the hype ar...

Re: NO SPOILERS (Please!!!) Star Wars

I'm just back from seeing it. I managed to avoid most of the spoilers, although not quite all. On the whole, I thought they have played it pretty well and it was certainly enjoyable. I'll probably go see it again in the next few days There were a few times where I thought things were just a bit too ...

Re: Tawny rising

I think that the hype around the 2011 Vintage Port was beneficial for all categories. Everybody knew 2011 was good straight away so there was press for port right from the end of vintage which helped get people interested in the other categories while waiting for the VPs to be released. That's my th...

Re: Port drinking season has finally arrived

Well as I type this, it is 95F in Melbourne, and getting warmer over the next couple of days. It has been pretty warm since October actually. The heat certainly impacts my port drinking, but I do have a few tawnies and a white port hanging around. I suspect that Riesling, Rose, Beer and Gin & to...

Re: Port glass vs. wine glass vs. other?

Last weekend while up in Edmonton, they had these for sale in a wine shop that I've never been to before. A pair cost 86 CDN. That was a bit rich in my book. Would love more, as I broke 2 this year. [dash1.gif] Yikes! Yeah that's too expensive. You can get them in the US for $43/pair from Williams ...

Re: Gould Campbell to be discontinued?

It would be interesting to know the status of the growers for which the Gould Campbell is normally sourced from. The rise of Douro table wine along with expiring contracts and ownership changes among the growers may make it hard to provide any consistency for the brand

Re: Establishing my port collection. Advice needed.

I don't think I saw anybody mention the 1985 Warre's VP amongst the other 85s. I had a bottle of that a few weeks ago and was not disappointed. For whatever reason, at least in my market, the Warre's is usually a bit cheaper than the Grahams, Dow, Taylors or Fonseca. I think I would have been 36 whe...

Re: Question about Quinta de la Rosa LBVs

They do the 10 and 20 year old tawnies in the same squat 500ml bottle. I'm pretty sure the LBV in the 500ml bottles is sealed with a T-Stopper so not designed for ageing. I asked Sophia Bergqvist about this on the 2013 harvest tour when we went there but she didn't elaborate too much on it other tha...

Re: how often would you declare?

It's a tricky question because quality is only one part of the equation. If you take the economics out of it, then the main question is - 'Is this good enough for a general declaration?'. Having said that, the economic reality is that the scarcity of declarations helps drive pricing and interest in ...

Eric, given that you hosted, I assume you knew this was the ringer. How did the others go? were they able to pick it as not being Portuguese? I've not had the opportunity to taste this tawny, nor have I done a direct comparison between an Australian tawny like that so it would have been a fun exerci...
