Re: 1963 Graham's

I have not thought of grapey as necessarily being a negative term, but others do. Grapey seems to have a negative connotation like Mogen David, cloying sweet. I think of Welch's grape juice and grape jam when I think of grapey. What I see or hear most of the time is how a port has flavors of cherrie...

Re: 1966 Warre

Backwards is proabably a better term. I opened another bottle yesterday at one of my double blind tasting groups. Most guessed it to be from the 80's or 90's. It had 4 hours and the tasters commented how pleasantly hot is was. The bottle on Christmas was decnated 8 plus hours. I am not sure how well...

The Cellar Tracker average is 92.3 or close to that. We have had some bottles better than others. Maybe you had a bad cork . It happens.

This from the beloved's and my anniversary year. We had much of it bought for around $25. Always a favorite but I think I average 92 points. We have 10 bottles left.

1963 Graham's Vintage Port

Another of the Berry Bros bottling from my cellar opened for Boxing Day. A great pale ruby color. Great nose, great mouth entry, very smooth, decanted for four hours. Not hot at all. Just pure ripe fruit, meaning fine grapes, some nice spice notes, long finish. I do someimtes wonder why "grape&...

1966 Warre Vintage Port

Opened for Christmas. What an alcohol kick at first opening but very powerful, lots of spice and dark fruit , black/white , red/ pepper blend. The color is a rich ruby, looks like it is from the 90's , not the 60's. Not the least bit pale or rust color. After 8 hours , still hot getting very nice. B...

Re: Cockburn 1983-Corked!

I don't know where I heard the number. Some forum. somewhere and I am old so I am not sure where. I hope 1 in 7 is right but isn't that close to 15%? Let's say it is 5-8%, of 1500 bottles of all wines, that is still 75- 120 bottles. I seem to have relatively good luck . This is the first corked port...

Re: Cockburn 1983-Corked!

Great when it is not corked. Sad when it is. An interesting thought to have them make it good, but at what inconvenience? An affidavit? Our word? Send the corked product? ( Not practical) I think the current conventional wisdom ( which I sometimes call the conventional ignorance) is that 15 % of all...

1983 Cockburn Vintage Port -- Corked!

I have posted here about my good luck with Cockburn 83. Roy et al have mentioned the many corked bottles. I opened a bottle this week. The beloved and I immediately smelled the unmistakable, wet dog, wet card board smell of corked wine. It had fruit fighting through and had some pleasant notes, but ...

Re: Who won the vintage - 1980?

1980 was supposed to be one of those blockbuster vintages, but it was quickly eclipsed by 83 and 85 and never overtook 1977. I have none left in my collection. What I remember is that your assessment of Ferreira is in line with mine. The Graham 1980 was the best of that vintage as I recall. but in t...

1983 Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port

Opened for our 27th anniversary April 30th . Nice ripe strawberry nose. Smooth entry, gentle coating of the palate. Hints of cinnamon spice. Not very deep or complex. Pleasant finish. 89 points. This is three points down from my last botle. Could be it is fading.

Re: Is there any reason why ruby Port is not sold in a box?

Sorry, guys I just can't go there. I think the pink port will end up in a box like cheap white zin. There might be a limited market of serious ruby port drinkers for box ruby , but I still think the image of cheap extra alcohol wino juice will be hard to overcome.

TN: Cossart Gordon 10 Year Old Bual

Tasted blind at a wine friend lunch. At first I thought it wa an Australian sticky . It had a rich, amber, brown color. Great brown sugar molasses nose. There was that slight nose of old wood varnish. Full luscious mouth feel. Very complex. It was very smooth lingering finish. This is so good , it co...

Re: Is there any reason why ruby Port is not sold in a box?

Call me a curmudgeon but I don't buy wine of any kind in 3 liter boxes. I associate it with cheap wines sold to alcoholics I have known. Add the 20% content of alcohol and I think that is the direction port in a three litre box would take and the image that would be derived. I think it would be nega...

Re: I found a great rarity ... has anybody heard of:

I am not tryingto be facetious but we had a recent thread on possible fakes, if you have never heard of it, could it be a fake? I think in that thread it was a 1933 Croft or something like that which no one had ever heard of and it turned out to be a fake.
