Re: What Port(s) have you purchased this week?

Wasn't planning on buying any wine today, but just returned with 14 bottles of Pocas Junior Colheita's & aged tawnies ;-). One 6-pack 1992 Colheita 2 bottles of 1995 Colheita 2 bottles of 1997 Colheita 2 bottles of 2000 Colheita 1 decanter-style bottle 10yo 1 bottle 20yo all bottled in 2011. Tot...

Re: Do you spit or swallow Port at a big tasting?

It depends. The issue with most tastings is that I usually have to drive home afterwards. Which means: being responsible with alcohol and spitting most of the wines. As most tastings end with the best wines, I save the swallowing for those ;-) Also, in my experience, drinking even moderate amounts o...

Re: Question about Q. do Noval at auction

There is an auction going on not far from here with lots of Q. do Noval. Now there are f.i. 2 OWC's with 12 bottles from the 1991 vintage for sale, one is presented as Quinta do Noval 1991, the other as Quinta do Noval, single quinta vintage port 1991. Maybe a dumb question, but is there any differ...

Re: What Port(s) have you purchased this week?

Major purchase today - (almost) completing my full line-up of Niepoort. 1 case per vintage is reserved for personal use and long-term storage, the rest for tastings and other events in the coming years: 7 x Niepoort '82, 12 x Niepoort '91, 12 x Niepoort '92, 9 x Niepoort '94, 12 x Passadouro '92, 36...

Re: What Port(s) have you purchased this week?

Acquired a bottle of 1975 Poças Junior yesterday. I'm not sure about this bottle, the wine looks too transparent and has no crust at all, just some minor deposit.

We'll see, I plan to open this next year in a horizontal '75 tasting (which happens to be my birthyear ;-)).

Didn't get it unfortunately. Had a bid on it at EUR 260 but got outbid.

Ah well, better luck next time.

Re: 1994 Taylor's Late Bottled Vintage

I agree.. I do have a number of younger unfiltered (mostly Niepoort) LBV's and am following their development. I also have a stash of LBVs - all 2003 in my case - that I'm trying desperately to save until they're 15 years old. So far, so good! 15 years after harvest? Or after release? (in which cas...

Re: 1994 Taylor's Late Bottled Vintage

I agree.. I do have a number of younger unfiltered (mostly Niepoort) LBV's and am following their development. But I'm an impatient person, so I can't resist buying the occasional old LBV when I see one somewhere -).. By the way, I bought this together with a '91 Taylor's LBV. Expectations for that ...

1994 Taylor's LBV Port

Time to taste this filtered LBV, bought a few weeks ago. Pop-n-pour right out of the wine cabinet. On the eye: the wine has a dark brownish-red color, with an orange/brown discoloration towards the edges. Not transparent at all, instead the wine seems a bit turbid. On the nose: somewhat closed but o...

Re: If you were the designer of wine aging cabinets ...

based on a life expectancy of 10 years I'd be upset if my wine fridges were not still going in 10 years. My dad has had two eurocaves going strong since the mid-90s, with just the occasional charcoal filter change. Tastvin do a 10-yr guarantee on their cabinets, i think, so i'd be surprised if they...

Re: If you were the designer of wine aging cabinets ...

Converting part of a room into a walk-in cellar is fine, but when that room has cost many hundreds of euros/pounds/dollars per square foot, it doesn't strike me as a "cheap" way of doing things! You'll need space for the wine fridges as well, so the cost of the room can be left out of the...

Re: If you were the designer of wine aging cabinets ...

My list of requirements would be: - compressor based cooling & high insulation value (cheap to run) - flexibilty in interior - shoud store multiple bottle shapes and sizes and 6 and 12 bottle wooden cases. - efficient space usage. It should be easy to use all available space in the cabinet - eno...

Re: Cresta Blanca vintage port wine

Given the history of the Cresta Blanca Wine Company, your bottle might hold more value purely as a collectible than as a bottle of port-style wine. You might try asking some antiques websites what they think. I agree. And this is probably a bottle from the prohibition era due to the use of the word...

Re: What to expect? 1848 Power's Bual

Have not had this particular wine, but Powers (full name Power Drury & Co.)is an old company who joined the Madeira Wine Association early in the twenthieth century. Assuming this wine was made before joining and was thus, kept under the Powers name. Do you know when it was bottled? 200 euros s...

What to expect? 1848 Power's Bual

This bottle (Power's 1848 Bual) is up for auction in less than two weeks time. Estimated price range EUR 200-300.

Haven't got a clue what to expect from this as I''ve never had Madeira pre-1950. Worthy of bidding? Or a risk?

1992 Pocas Colheita Port -- (bottled 2011)

More work on cleaning out the single-bottle stock. Pocas Colheita 1992 (bottled 2011) This 19 year-old tawny appears very bright in the glass, with an orange-brown shine to it. High viscosity. On the nose, orange zest, dark dried fruits, a bit of alcohol (but not overwhelming), chocolate, toffee, al...

Re: What Port(s) have you purchased this week?

A case of Niepoort 2000 and a case of Niepoort 2005, two years that were missing from my (now almost complete) lineup of Niepoort's vintages from 1970 to the present day. Still some gaps pre-1990 however. Also, a box of Niepoort Crusted 2007, to satisfy most situations where I would otherwise have b...
