Re: an interesting tasting

Nope. Never an entire flight or even close. That is really something....and not like it was a bunch of known hooligans such as an 83 Cockburn or 90s Niepoort.

So alternate meaning to WOTN: Worst of the Night.

Re: What have you opened this week?

Had a friend who lives overseas visit the UK and had a bit of a blow-out lunch, which gave us an excuse to open some of those bottles you hold on to for the right occasion. We ended up drinking Warre 1985, Dow 1945, Warre 1945, Warre 1934, Fonseca 1927 and Martínez 1922. Lunch started at 11.30 and ...

Re: decanters

I have 8 primary decanters. 6 I got for $16 each online (think Andy V had the suggestion). Nice wide mouths. Work very well. The other two are a basic crystal, very wide bottoms. Love them--my everydayers. I've got a couple fancier cut glass crystal ones but they are heavy, the necks are too narrow ...

All last night for a local tasting! Quite a night.
What was the WOTN? How was the 1960 Warre's?
1983 Dows. The 1960 Warres was fine--but seemed past peak and had limited complexity.

Re: What have you opened this week?

Christmas Eve a 2003 Niepoort VP in an emergency pop and pour situation (someone forgt to toss the 1995 Dalva Colheita in the car--I keep a few bottles at my Mother's that's why I had the Niepoort) It was fine but between the lack of decant and just 19 year of age we just did not do it justice. Incr...

Re: What have you opened this week?

1995 Smith Woodhouse Madalena VP. How is this coming along? This is good, but it's going to be very good in probably 5 to 7 years. It's a typical Smith Woodhouse which means it evolves at a glacial pace. I decanted it for 11 1/2 hours and even that wasn't enough. Don't get me wrong it's still prett...

Re: Sediment?

Never a coffee filter!!! I do exactly what Glenn and Andy do, soon as I see sediment I move the strained to a side glass and decant the rest---it will have some particulate in it. I use this little bit to get a "pre-taste" to make sure not corked. Try explaining why you are decanting 8 bot...

Re: What have you opened this week?

Tonight having a local friends over for Potuck supper, Port, Scotch and hopefully lively conversation. I have standing a 1983 Dows (A very nice Port that seems to fly under the radar--consistently around 92-94 points for me) and a 2000 Broadbent LBV. If needed, a 20 Year Quevedo or 30 Year San Leona...

Re: What Port(s) have you purchased this week?

Just received a big order from earlier this fall: 2 x Quinta do Mourao 40 Year Old White 1 x Quinta do Mourao 50 Year Old White So jealous of these whites. I just got some 30 year olds in Penna--on "clearance" for $75/bottle which I felt was a decent price (had been $125-$130). EIther you...

Re: Let's talk Auction Prices!

Btw John if you see this, I bought a case of the Rozes (1LBV,1LBV,4,3,3) because they were about to sell out, finally. It was simply too cheap to pass up. I will save the 5 for a vertical sometime. I bought out the remaining 4 of the 2000 VPs and then someone else bought out the ~8 2007 VPs. So now...
