I went on the Website, and saw the options. I'll look forward to any of you experts telling me the difference between the 2003VP and the 2003+VP. I'm not up to that standard, but the 20year old Tawny interests me. It is descibed on site as: The grapes are crushed by foot, and we then age the wine in...

A Quiet Friday evening...

My better half has retired early, I've decided to stay in. I'm searching the site, but as good as it is generally, its quiet. I'm opening a bottle of Grahams 'The Tawny' Port. Wish I could taste 'the whiff of roasted hazel nuts with a hint of vanilla cream!'. But I cant. It just tastes very good! An...

Derek,
I told you, you were an informative sod! But thanks. Makes sense. At the moment I'm full of questions, but I'm sure once I've got the basics I'll calm down.

How Do experts know how long to 'lay down' ports?

As I emmerse myself in reviews, and descriptions, I'm missing something. Through lots of experience and skill, I can imagine how expert tasters, and the Houses, spend a year or two deciding that one year was better than another. The same strategy over how one brand compares to another. My question i...

I've found the 20year old Otima at Waitrose for £14. That sounds superb. Suppose I'll have to buy the 10year old from Tesco's for £10 as well to see if I can tell the difference. Sadly, Sainsburys aren't listing Grahams Crusted. I did find it in wine wholesalers, but at £16.99. So if you were gettin...

Derek, Sounds like a date. I bet you say that to all the boys!!! Ha,ha. You appear quite an informative Sod, but if you can put up with an enthusiastic amateur..bring it on. You'll see from the picture, I'm useful in other areas, you can lean on me when, later in the evening, the co-ordination and e...

Thanks for that. No I haven't tried the 20year old, but with two of you recommending it, consider me on it. I'm learning all the time. I had ignored the 10yr old on quite a few occasions, because it was in a young and trendy looking bottle! I'd go for the neighbouring black 'classic' bottle with a w...

I've just seen a similar 'cheap and cheerful' post on a previous page on the 'Port Basics' Forum. Loads of suggestions that will keep me busy. If only I'd looked first. You live and learn. While I'm on, I've just been rushed into Hospital. I poisoned myself. I thought I was eating an onion, but it t...

Need cheering up with a cheap bottle? Warre's Otima

I've just spent the evening with a bottle of Warre's Otima, a 10year old Tawny. What a splendid companion. Light and smooth and readily available. Not a classic, not worthy of further effort, but well worthy of further drinking. Anyone else have any cheap and cheerful surprises? Cheers, Alan.

All this talk of ex's, (and I have 4 kids to 2 ex's), reminds me of this tale. A Police man is driving behind a car with a loose registartion plate. He flashes the car to pull over to tell him to tighten it before it falls off. The car doesn't stop and is off in a flash, and quickly travelling at ma...

Hi Roy, what on earth is all that? Are you being serious or have you been through most of the crate! Apologies if this has deep meaning, but if it has its flown over my head at 30,000 feet. To lighten the mood, have you heard about the 3 legged dog that walks into a Bar, and says, 'I'm looking for t...

Thanks for all the help. Looks like I've got an odd bottle. I appreciate I could have stored it wrong, but there you go. I'll look for an occassion sooner, rather than later to give it a go. I'll make sure I have a 'fall back' classic on hand in case its a disappointment. I'm not really a buyer of c...

Golfing in Albufeira, May 2007. Port Excursion? Any Clues?

Hi, I'm going to play golf for a week in Albufeira starting May 19th,2007. Out of the dozen golfers, at least 4 are willing to take a day or two out to take in a Port Tour. Has anyone any clues, tour operators, recommendations, etc, as to how to go about that? We're the sort who would just get a taxi...

Harveys 1985 Vintage Porto

Hi, I've just joined up, and to start things off, I've got a question. In clearing my loft, I came across a bottle of Harveys Vintage Porto 1985. It reminded me of when I got it, I think it was around 86/87, and I was told by a wine merchant close to the Port of Liverpool, that he had aquired severa...
