Re: TN: Broadbent Madeira - 10 Year Old Malmsey

Roy, The '64 Bual and '78 Terrantez are on "sale" if you can believe it, apparently at cost price! What would you say is a good price for each of the Madeiras? I'm not sure it will do any good but it won't hurt to make an offer. The worst that can happen is that they'll say no. Cheers........

Re: 1976 Fonseca Guimaraens Vintage Port

Some years ago at a tasting a number of us thought that the '76 Guimaraens was more backwards than the '77 Fonseca, and had a longer future ahead. Naturally the Fonseca representative thought otherwise. I'm wondering what other people think about the difference between the two. Anyway, we all agreed...

I thought (and hoped) Carlos meant how to quote something from another post when posting a reply. I can't seem to do it. All I see is "[quote]#&.....

Re: TN: Broadbent Madeira - 10 Year Old Malmsey

Todd Pettinger said: "If you can PM me the name of that store, and they have any left, I will go grab another one and give it some serious air before consuming ( a few days!)" Todd, I was at the store and picked up the last two bottles. Sorry, I took Andy's "peer pressure" advice...

Re: would you buy this bottle?

Todd Pettinger said: "I just came away from a store on Friday with a bottle of Fonseca 2000 LBV that had leakage (although it seemed recent) and low neck - just above shoulder fill level. The manager of the store looked at it and said ""it is probably not worth the $35 it is listed at...

Re: Smith Woodhouse LBV

Todd,

Sounds like a good idea. I also have some half bottles of the 1994 Quinta do Noval LBV. It's Roy's favourite. I'll send you my contact number and we can arrange a date.

Re: TN: Blandy's Duke of Clarence

Ray, I've discovered that Madeiras are almost indestructible. Many years ago I picked up a number of bottles of Madeiras that were on sale at a government controlled ALCB outlet. They were Malmsey Madeiras with no age statement other than "Old Malmsey Madeira". I couldn't find any informat...

Re: TN: Broadbent Madeira - 10 Year Old Malmsey

Todd, Thanks for your extended tasting notes. I really enjoyed them. I have been told of a recent sighting here in Edmonton of a couple of bottles of Broadbent 10 Year Old Malmsey for C$34.99. It's probably on sale. I'm going to give it a try but haven't decided wether I should pick up one or two. C...

Re: Smith Woodhouse LBV

Dave,

You're right about the Madelena. In the end I went with the '94. After all, I can always go back and try a '95.

Re: A wake up call

Well, I went to the store this evening on my way back home and found, of all things, a bottle of 1999 Quinta do Crasto Douro Reserva. It was sitting there among the 2003 just begging to be adopted. So I obliged. As it is an "only child" it will go into the cellar. The orphanage continues t...

Smith Woodhouse LBV

A friend of mine recently spotted some Smith Woodhouse LBV for C$24.99. It's made in the "traditional style" so it is bottled early (four years from the vintage) and unfiltered. The liquor store had two vintages on hand, the '94 and '95. My question is this: if you had to choose a single b...

Re: Do you prefer Quinta do Noval ...

Despite the fact that their Colheitas are very good (I still remember the delicious '76), I'd probably lean towards the vintage port.

Re: A wake up call

Haven't seen the 2005 Quinta do Crasto Reserva recently but I did see some 2003 Quinta do Crasto Reserva. It may have been snapped up what with all the excitement but has anyone tried it? Is it any good?

Re: would you buy this bottle?

Just because the level is low doesn't mean the wine will be bad. Recently I saw a couple of bottles of 1970 Chateau Musar (Lebanon) that was on sale in a local liquor store, and it had a low fill just like this bottle of '63 Noval. Despite the fact that the wine was reduced in price from C$98 to C$6...
