Smith Woodhouse 1985

I have had several bottles of this wine over the years, 6 to be precise. I bought nine bottles back in the late nineties and tried them about once a year. The first 4 bottles I found a little thin and with bitter tannins; an acceptable drink but I was glad I got them cheap. However the last two bott...

Another vote for the 74 Noval, had it the other night and it wowed non-port drinkers, also one Lady who,as she said, rarely drank came back for a second glass!

I have no idea about these two as I only have used Michael Broadbent and recently a certain Roy Hersh ( well I think that is his name). Anyway doesn't give you an answer but how many points do I get for sucking up?

Bought most of mine in year end sales presumably when the merchant wanted more space for younger vintages. I have mainly Dow's and also Fonseca Guimaraens, Graham's, Noval Nacionaland Taylor Vargellas. I have only tried the Dow(Jan07) which was nice and fruity but seemed a little soft. I do not know...

One of the best questions ever! I know, way back when, my first port must have been a ruby port and after that I know I had, and much enjoyed a vintage port at my engagement dinner but no idea of the producer or year!. So to answer the question, my first accurate recollection of the type and age of ...

I can only give you a personal opinion but the Graham's is not that old and I have had it recently. It is a very good and drinking suberbly. If you do a search I think you will find many positive notes on this site. It would also give you the best idea of what a mature (but by no means old) VP is li...

Robert, What do you call a large quantity? If more than a case definitely some of each, the '85 Graham is lovely and will last and the 97 Taylors a great wine for the future. If it is one or the other I suggest the Graham's as it is older and I assume (maybe incorrectly) that the Taylors will be mor...

Hi Ray, Personally I would take the port, I do like PX but
it is just a tad too sweet to have that often. What I do like
is a good Oloroso and the choice between a port and say
a Gonzalez Byass Matusalem is not an easy one for me.

The best impression on me was a bottle of Croft 1984 LBV. The bottle was picked up at a local auction for just over a tenner and I put it away and forgot about it. A couple of months later in a desperate need for a port I found it and opened it. It was just beautiful soft fruit, mellow tannin with a...

I vote for Colheita. Thay are only available at the better
retailers and they only really ever have a couple at most available.
I also find that they have limited stocks and soon run out.
So lots more Colheitas please, more choice and more of them!

This is a very intriguing post. In the Eddy household my good lady is a socialist when it comes to wine ( Fair shares all round) and invariably she will get the first pour. It occurs to me that we often have a slightly different view of the wine at the beggining of the bottle but usually end up agre...

Ok Roy, Can't argue with you, I opened a half bottle of Quinta Do Noval Colheita 1964 (bottled 1996) for the hell of it and it was beautiful. This was 1hr after the Bomfin 1988 (see other thread) and for once I got the order of wines served right. What a marvellous wine, walnuts , raisins lovely aci...

Well Andy, It was lovely, liquid walnuts with alcohol,
in balance and a delight. Lighter in style to a year ago,
But a long length and tannins that cut through the sweetness.

As they say in France "a point"

Tonight a half bottle of Dows Bomfin 1988.
Just decanted and a very light garnet colour,
more so than previous half bottles. We will see what evolves.

Biggest surprise of the last year

For me it has been a Croft LBV 1984 which I had the other night. I picked it up for under £12.00 at auction and was not expecting much. The surprise was that it was delicious. Lots of lovely fruit on the nose and palate , a lovely background of honey giving an overall impression somewhat reminiscent...
