TN: 2003 Quinta do Crasto Douro Reserva Old Vines

2003 Quinta do Crasto Douro Reserva Old Vines - Portugal, Douro (3/1/2014) Candied fruit, caramel, toasty oak, clamping tannins and very weak acidity. A difficult pairing with food due to its lack of acidity and heat (14.5% abv). Too bad so many Douro producers are selling out to the New World styl...

TN: 2010 Niepoort Coche Douro White

Very pale and clear in the glass. Fascinating nose of green melon, mineral, and caramel. Touch of oak on the palate, with more melon and mineral, and a buttery caramel malo note, still showing decent acidity. I am completely charmed by this obscure blend of grape varieties, and the malo treatment it...

TN: 2010 Niepoort Redoma Reserva Douro White

Very bright, acidic, with a touch of heat. An interesting contrast to the Coche, this really shines as it melts into spicy food, though it lacks the substance for sipping on its own. (91 pts.)

Sounds like you need some Port, Roy.

I've made it as far as Chicago, connection to the OC looks on time, so my luck is holding up so far. A hundred miles down, 2,000 to go...

Re: Which is more interesting?

The VP's are too young for me, and the single vintage makes the colheita more interesting than the 30-year. Not saying it's better, though.

Re: Pre-Taylor Offline, Friday Feb 28, 2014

Okay, I seem to finally be putting the last traces of lingering sinus infection behind me. Haven't been drinking much wine at all for the past couple months, so I'm going to be ready to go this weekend! Andy, are you sure there will be enough wine? I'm counting on Roy to throw a few surprises ...

Re: In search of Average

Looking back at my tasting notes over the years, I was surprised to see my worst ever score for a Port was 87 points  That's probably partly because I just don't drink a lot of Port, so when I do open a Port I try to make it something decent. And some of my lower scores have been for Ports th...

I'll be flying into SNA (not Ontario) around 11 am, and will pick up a rental car. If anyone else is flying in around that time, they are welcome to ride along to the hotel.

Re: what to do when there is too much HEAT

Although I'm typically the first person to complain of heat or booziness in any type of wine, if air doesn't help I'm usually inclined to just tolerate it rather than resort to chilling. I don't like to lose the other aromatics.

Would love to ship a couple old Bordeaux out to Andy, but don't see them fitting in among a bunch of Ports. But there is always room for Champagne. [cheers.gif]

Re: 1953 Taylor or Fonseca

I wonder what it was that you drank, exactly. Neither of those shippers declared a 1953 VP. You perhaps had a single vintage tawny or special release of some sort? Never seen anything from that vintage from T or F.

Re: New FTLoP favicon?

Not to minimize Julian's excellent efforts, but I'm not sure I understand the basic premise that this icon needs changing [shrug.gif] As far as the small "o" in the old icon, might it make sense to shorten the "t" to match, thus creating a regularly alternating large/small/large/...

Re: A Taylor Offline

This post should probably go on the Friday thread, but since Andy's got things on a roll here... How are we looking for wines Friday night? Are we going completely blind or should people start declaring what they're bringing so we have an idea? I'm not planning on bringing anything in my checked bag...
