While I love Port, I don't get the opportunity to drink enough of it to be able to participate in discussions about specific Ports. And sadly, I had a rather nasty cold for the last Port I tasted, so I didn't post any notes because my taste buds were all messed up. Somehow I doubt that "bland &...

It's brand new - the first installation at the Big Brown Steam Electric Station near Fairfield, Texas was I believe only installed last year. And as with any new technology, it's having a few growning pains. Big Brown is a lignite (coal) power plant and it's one of the worst in the nation when it co...

Alan, My understanding is that the United States did not sign the Kyoto treaty specifically because it was not clear on the roles of both Western and developing nations. Kyoto left the emissions of developing nations like China and India basically untouched, and given their size relative to Europe a...

Thanks for all the replies! Kris - I've tried Graham's Six Grapes and it was a little too fruity, as you said. It's one of the better "basic" rubies that I have tried, though. I've sort of skipped LBVs for the most part, though I did try one while in Portugal that was pretty good. I'll hav...

I need a recommendation

Most of the Ports that I enjoy are tawnies or colheitas. I would like to experience a really good ruby, though, because I suspect that part of the reason I prefer tawnies is that I haven't tasted a really good ruby. So... some background on my preferences. I'm not a red wine drinker - the tannins ar...

Sandeman only has a handful of bottles left of their 1904 VP and they no longer sell it. They have perhaps 20 bottles left of the 1906 which they sell for 3000 Euros. I suspect, though, that there are many Ports that are down to their last few bottles. So when you ask about "rarest" do you...

I am a skeptic much like Derek. I'm not willing to believe - or disbelieve - in "global warming" just yet. But if you keep reading you may be surprised at my conclusion. Climate change? Sure, it happens regularly from the planet's point of view. It's rather rare from our point of vi...

The list of Ports was far too long for me to remember, but there were some VERY expensive Ports available at the Solar do Vinho do Porto. I'm fairly certain they ranged into triple digits (Euros). The most expensive that I tasted was a 40-yr old for 28 Euros... sadly I do not remember the brand. It ...

Yes indeed, I thought that $70 was an outrageously low price for that quality of port. I would normally expect to pay $100 or more for a '94... or even higher for a Taylor Fladgate. The same wine shop had 2 bottles of the '94 Taylor Fladgate at $250 each, and both were gone before I arrived on the 2...

Hello everyone! My name is Glenn Elliott. I live about 5 minutes from Roy here in Sammamish, WA, and am pretty new to port. I'm a producer for cell phone games and I work in downtown Seattle. My first bottle was given to me for my 40th birthday in 2004. It was a Porto Rocha 20-yr old tawny, and I re...

No, I don't know Ed Murray. My two port drinking friends are Will Tian and Steve Kam. Will lives near you, and Steve lives near me.

Fortunately for me, my wife likes red wine so I do still get to taste it regularly. We do a lot of label exploring and it has served us well over the years.

decanting time on a young VP

I'm learning very quickly since joining, and one of the first things I noticed is that VP need to be decanted much further in advance of drinking than I thought. I was under the impression that 30-60 minutes was all it took, and that too much longer than that might damage the wine. However, I see ma...

Roy, A friend of mine emailed me a link to the newspaper interview and FTLOP was referred to there. That's the whole story! I have one Sammamish area port drinking friend who lives even closer to you than I do, and a second one who lives closer to me south of Pine Lake. Both started new jobs within ...

You have no idea how happy this makes me, because I just picked up the last 2 bottles of this from my local wine store a couple of weeks ago for the ludicrous price of $70/bottle. I've have heard that you really can't go wrong with an 1994 VP, but Dow's wasn't on my list of bottles to acquire. I jus...

One more note to add to what Roy said - I have been told that variations in temperature also prematurely age wines. I was told that a wine is better stored at a constant 70 degrees F (which would normally be considered too warm) than in a location where the temperature varies between 55 F and 75 F. ...

I finished off a half bottle of Kopke '87 Colheita over the long weekend and plan to open a bottle of Rocha '77 Colheita for the Super Bowl. It's far too soon, but I plan to open a bottle of 2001 Quinta do Panascal at a poker party this Friday night. We toured the vineyards there this summer and rea...

Great article... it helped me find this web site!

We're practically neighbors, too. I can't believe I've never bumped into you at one of the wine stores around here!
