Colheitas

Since I have never had any colheitas I will be buying one or both of the following 375 ml size that I saw at KL wines: 1990 Kopke ($ 32) and/or 1991 Dona Matilde ($ 25), my question is--Do I decant them for several hours like vintage port or "pop and pour"? Thanks

Re: Cellar Organization

I keep a log of the cellar location for each wine. I keep tasting notes for each on 5 by 7 cards. I place bottles in any open cardboard box slot. Tom's organizational skills are impressive!

Re: Tasting old port

Marc-welcome. I have not had many of these so I will only offer some suggestions. How many total port tasters/drinkers will be at the tasting? The more people and wines the harder it is to control/organize/manage the tasting. How many fortified wines will you be serving? I suggest limiting the numbe...

Re: FABULOUS COLLECTION OF OLD PORTS FOR SALE

Being a curious northern californian with time on his hands I visited this location. It is a warehouse with great temp control but not used to on-site retail sales. Will call pickups OK. They let me purchase a Fonseca 85 and Grahams 85 for the prices shown on Roy's post during my visit. Great folks....

No. I buy selectively and share indiscriminately but never sell. I do not buy large quantities of any one port.

Re: Off site Port storage?

I keep 60 cases offsite. Costs $ 14 a case for a year. Stored in temperature controlled lockers that hold 30 cases each. My collection is 50% port and the rest is mostly red table wine or German whites. I also would like to say that it is all DRC and First Growths but I have not bought any of that s...

Re: When YOU are doing the rating of Port ...

The 100 point system is as good as any other imho But the really important aspect is the written description. The number can get your attention but the description (and knowing the reviewer's bias) is more important to me. So going to a retail shop and seeing all the post-its with rating numbers is ...

If they are offering it in one bottle lots and it is not too expensive I am sure we would love to hear your opinion of this wine. Unfortunately I have never tried it. Regards. Jim

Re: Advise on crusted port requested

I second Derek's counsel. You have bought 6 bottles so you can afford to open one now and take good notes on the experience. From these notes (even though you have stated your "newness" to port in previous threads) you will be able to judge when to open the next one. For ports I suggest er...

Re: Stylistic Preference for VP

I am solidly on the side of aged VPs, as much age as I can get without losing the fruit. My goal is Balance! I love the great body/great balance that the best producers provide but am solidly in favor of diversifying my producer experiences. I tend to dislike the ones that show too much alcohol. I k...

Re: Non-Portuguese port-styles - Growing market? Or diluted by truly dessert style wines

I am solidly on the side of "Portugal only" labeling for Ports. The consumer's expectation is that their "port" will have a flavor profile similar to Portuguese ports. Since many fortified wines throughout the world use a variety of grapes the flavors vary just as widely. As poin...
