Re: LBV questions (Dow's 2011 LBV in particular)

I'm going to disagree slightly here with John on the filtered LBVs. There is certainly no immediate need to drink up the 2011s, but as an example I bought quite a lot of the Taylors 2003 LBV which was both filtered, and an exceptionally good release. My last couple of bottles of that were consumed ...

Re: LBV questions (Dow's 2011 LBV in particular)

I've drunk a lot of aged LBVs and can tell you that they age extremely well. That holds true for both filtered and non-filtered versions. A couple of cases in point:: * - 1978 Sandeman. This bottle was drunk at Bern's Steakhouse a couple of years ago, so it was decanted and poured with no time given...

Re: 1985 Noval LBV

Thanks for the note. I've been doing a lot of experimenting with aged LBV's and have generally had great success with their age-ability. I'm surprised a magnum format didn't have better results, but 1985 has turned out to be a more variable vintage than originally thought. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G9...

Re: WTB: Pre-1850 Malvasia. Any sources?

http://www.courtierwines.com/ has a 1834 Barbeito Malvasia http://www.winewatch.com has a 1795. http://www.taylorandnorton.com/ has the 1835 Quinta do Serrado Boal. There is quite a bit of 1845 Cossart Bual Centaenary Solera Madeira out there, but I don't know if you were looking for a solera. Euro...

WTB: Pre-1850 Malvasia. Any sources?

Hello all,

I'm looking to source a bottle of pre-1850 Malvasia for an upcoming tasting. Producer doesn't matter that much, as long as it's a known name. Does anyone have thoughts on a source? RWC doesn't show any on their website, but I haven't called them yet.

Thanks!

Roy, don't sweat it. It sounds like a great offer, so when it comes, it comes. Frankly, shipping in cooler weather will be welcomed.

TN: NV Henriques & Henriques Madeira Inauguration Wine (Portugal, Madeira)

NV Henriques & Henriques Madeira Inauguration Wine - Portugal, Madeira (6/17/2016) Opened on 6/15/16 to provide a two-day decant. Notes from 6/15/16: Massive acidity that makes the wine practically undrinkable. This was expected based on other online notes. Underneath, flavors indicating a big ...

1991 Fonseca Guimaraens Vintage Port

1991 Fonseca Porto Guimaraens Vintage - Portugal, Douro, Porto (6/14/2016) Drunk after a 24 hour decant. Dark ruby with little color loss. Still a bit of alcohol heat. Great fruit coming out. Medium sweetness that worked perfectly with the bleu it was served with. Probably 10 years away from maturi...

Re: 1985 30-year retrospective - February 26 - Chicago, IL

The only wine that seemingly did not ring true to what I've experienced in 1985 VP was the Gould Campbell that John described. That is typically a mere infant at this point, from best bottles and stuffed with promise for the future decades. All the bottles from this case have underperformed. The co...

Re: 1985 30-year retrospective - February 26 - Chicago, IL

I did a lousy job of taking decent notes, mostly because my nose wasn't working well that night. I believe Kurt and Alex will post much better formal notes. As for my informal impressions, in no particular order: 1. Fonseca - This was a monster. By accident, I had only given it about a 4-hour decant...

Unfortunately Brian C. had to cancel at the last moment due to illness. However, my wife Jan will step in to participate with a bottle of Fonseca, so we're still at 9 tasters with the same bottles as earlier. Looking forward to seeing you all on Friday night!

Thanks Julian! Wish I could make this tasting, but I can't miss this year of the Vancouver International Wine Festival, as FTLOP has a "lot" in their Gala auction. Have fun ... John will provide a great degree of expertise. :scholar: Sorry you can't make it Roy. We'll make sure to take go...

Oh wow, I hadn't really looked at it until now. That's pretty strange that someone would put a bottle on the strings of a piano.

John, I just noticed, is that a picture of your Port sitting in a piano 3 years ago? Hi Bradley, The photos I posted on this thread I just took yesterday. They're on a burgundy-colored countertop, and you're seeing the backsplash in one of the photos. That's usually the place I shoot photos of port...

Re: 1985 Kopke Colheita Port

How long do the argon capsules last and what's the replacement cost of them. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk They're good for about 5 bottles. I bought a 10 pack for $40 when I bought the unit. That doesn't seem so bad. IIRC from reading the Coravin was super expensive for the proprietary refill...

1985 Kopke Porto Colheita - Portugal, Douro, Porto (2/12/2016) Tapped with my Pungo (like a Coravin, but better). Please tell us more about the Pungo, with photos if possible?
