Re: What is the first known LBV Port?
I read that Taylor's gets credit for the term "Late Bottled Vintage", but not necessarily that they were the first to produce a port that would be considered an LBV. I don't recall off the top of my head where I read that, but I don't think it was Taylor's propaganda.

Cruz Ruby, and you know, it wasn't all that bad. That corked bottle of whatever I had was otherwise pretty good. I don't mind corked so much. Hey, I drink funky Belgian beers too.

I didn't notice ethyl acetate, but I still have some left, so I'll check again next time.

Re: 20 Year Old Tawny Port by Ferreira "Duque de Braganca"
More red than some tawny's I've had, but had the blending to orange that Glenn mentioned. The aroma at first was of alcohol, but not straight up hot. It was more of a cognac with hint of armagnac/wood aroma. What's VA? I presume some sort of alcohol. Taste was fruity to start, with raspberries and s...

Re: What are the 3 best Ports you've had in 2008
My inexperience and lack of tasting anything vintage (maybe had a 1997, but if so it wasn't noteworthy) gives these two:
- Quinta do Javali 30 Year Tawny
- Calem 10 Year Tawny
But 2008 isn't over yet

Re: Your story: What first got you into Port?
I can't say one thing got me into drinking port, but a combination of things. Here are perhaps the big three: 1. I've always enjoyed drinking wine. I like beer too, but my parents both drink wine, we lived in Europe when I was an infant, I lived in Europe later in life for a while ... so the wine th...

Sorry Carlos, but I went through my receipts last night and couldn't find one for that restaurant. I couldn't remember the name, and was hoping I had a receipt. I guess I paid cash that evening. -EricCarlos Rodriguez wrote:As I'll stay a week there, I'll have time to try it.

Re: Conservation of bottles in Wine Cabinets
Thanks for the replies. Right now my cellar is a section of my unfinished basement, with a rack that is overflowing. I'm hoping to do some finishing of the basement in the next year at which point the cellar will become a more dedicated space, with more rack capacity. I'll look at humidity control t...

Re: Conservation of bottles in Wine Cabinets
Better to have high humidity than too low of humidity. I presume the risk here is the cork drying out. Are there other risks, and what can I do to mitigate them all? I ask because my cellar in Colorado is extremely extremely dry (and pretty sterile too). My wines are stored horizontally. I do own a...

Re: Christmas Port
I was invited to Christmas brunch at the home of a sommelier, so there may be a lot of wine consumed that day. I haven't picked out a port yet. Hmmmm. The day after is my 40th, so the next decision is whether to track down a 1968 port (any recommendations?), open a magnum of Double Bastard Ale I hav...

Re: 1st Annual FTLOP Gala Port Celebration
Well I have tickets for the wife and me. I'm guessing Seattle isn't too busy that time of year given the fares and rates I saw. I missed out on the $91 airfare (roundtrip, plus fees, etc., but still under $150 total), but still managed a good deal. Rental car seemed like a steal. I think you should ...

There's a good restaurant across the street from there. It only is about 4 meters wide on the street front, but runs deep into the building. I'll see if I can find the name if you're interested.

1. Friday the 5th was to the day the 75th anniversary of the ratification of the twenty-first amendment. I may have had a drink, but forget to specifically toast that. 2. I have mixed feelings on the mish-mash of state laws concerning alcohol. I believe the 3-tier system is a hindrance to choice and...

Re: What is the youngest LBV
Eric, The Dow's LBV's are filtered and not made for aging, they are made to drink young. So pop the corks and let us know how they are. I was really surprised by the 2003 Dow LBV. It had more of a tawny, marginally even 10 year old tawny flavor than I expected, despite a strong and deep red color. ...
