Re: What is your Port "cellar defender" ?

Thanks for the pics Eric... This is what I was hoping for... The liquor store near my house has these new designs... Was just wondering if the bottle redesign coincided with the juice updates.

I also had the old stuff and believed it to be pretty brutal. A cooking port if ever there was...

Re: TRADER JOE'S - not the first name you think of for Port

Coming is the Quarles Harris Port 1994. This will hit Trader Joes about mid-July. It will be around $23.00 when it hits the stores. Keep your eyes open for this. It is a very solid VP and what a bargain it shall be. <Todd commences to weep openly on the floor> I need to move to the States!!! :beat:

Re: Port in Magnums

I have but one lonely magnum, from my first trip to Boston and meeting and drinking with Moses and Sean... What a night that was! One of my trophies ended up being a magnum of Grahams 97. Did you also buy 1980 Graham? I picked up 2003 Dow Magnums at the same place for $100 (I think around that pric...

Re: Port in Magnums

I do have a number of magnums from more recent vintages and I do find that they are a great treat for a large group. In addition I have also picked up some double mags, although I'm not quite sure when I'm going to open up those bad boys... When I come over Marc! 8--) we'll put those babies down!! ...

Re: What have you opened this week?

I opened a half bottle of Croft 2004 LBV. Filled the hole nicely. Very drinkable stuff and around £4 a half bottle in Tesco at the moment. Al, if I lived in the UK I know three things would be true: 1. I'd be drunk every night. With that type of price and the availability, the flow would never stop...

Re: What is your Port "cellar defender" ?

Has anyone tried the new Cockburn's Special Reserve? I've bought a couple bottles of this in the past year and yes it is FAR, actually FAR , better than it used to be. The Symington's have done a fantastic job of turning this product around. Wow, that's saying a lot Andy... I may go pick some up. I...

Re: Lance Armstrong and the FDA investigation

Difficult question to answer Moses... I'm going to have to think long and hard about that because realistically, you've exposed the duality of my argument: the entertainment I enjoy from seeing amazing performance on the bike versus whether or not it is fair that if some were doping, all should be e...

Die hard Wings fan here. Painful to see us go out against SJ after fighting back in the series, but such is life. Now we've got to deal with Rafalski retiring, which may come with Lidstrom retiring as well (hope not). Gotta pull for the Bolts, who just forced gm 7, since The Captain is in charge th...

Marco, That is certainly a possiblity! Would I ever love to be involved in something like this. I have dreamed of one day just being ale to try a Nacional, never mind several at one time. If something like this IS ever arranged, i would want to be there. Of course, if i attended, i would probably h...

Re: 2003 Portal VP

Day two... Not much has changed, although the Port is much more floral on the nose. The almost fresh blueberries yesterday have been muted. Overall, it is primary but soft. Not overly complex.

I now know what a sleeping 8 year old VP is like. 8--)

Re: Non-Portuguese port-styles - Growing market? Or diluted by truly dessert style wines

My own :twocents: on the matter is that I am for Port being from Portugal. I have used "port style" (again, like Eric) to describe other fortified wines made using similar methods to those used on Portugal, and have not thought much about it. One of my favourites is "Pipe," an of...

 yeah Andy, only by two's... :D Roy, the kids come out first, followed by as much of the best bottles that I could carry before the firefighters inevitably shut down my efforts. Years ago, I would have said the racing bikes come out first, but now I've discovered that a new bike is always neede...

I agree that USPS got a good deal for their money. I still refer to the "glory days" of American cycling as the Postal days or USPS glory days... And I'm not even American! Some of the most glorified clips of Lance still feature him in the dark blue USPS jerseys (anyone remember "The ...

Re: What have you opened this week?

Double bill tonight: 10 year old Quinta de Ventozelo Tawny for the wife (okay, I may have tried SOME!!) and a half of the 2003 Portal for myself. Yeah, I know, the Portal is way too young to be consumed now, but I was looking for something of a celebratory nature and my cellar defenders took the hol...

2003 Quinta do Portal Vintage Port

This is the first VP i have opened up in over half a year. It is in a 375ml bottle, so not sure just what to expect at this point in the Port's development. Deep, dark, intense purple colour. Some spirit on the nose attacked early but subsided a few hours later. I somewhat expected a sleeping baby b...

Re: A 'dumb" question about vintage declarations

Todd, I'm really pleased to see you back here and contributing again. Your absence has always been felt and at least we've kept in touch over the past few years. Who knows, maybe we'll even drink some Port together later this year (Nov.) during my annual trek to Edmonton. Congrats to you my friend ...
