Re: The definitive book on Vintage Port is now on sale

My copy arrived yesterday. The box was opened and the book was very slightly damaged, but I am OK with it as-is. Now I don't have to worry so much about spilling Port on a pristine copy. Very impressive work. I thumbed through it quickly and can't wait to spend some quality time with it. Very happy ...

Re: What have you opened this week?

Poças 30 Year Tawny. Very light tawny color and more citrussy than other 30 years I have had before. One I had not tried before.

Re: What have you opened this week?

Maynard's 40 year Tawny. A nice Tawny for the price. Love the bottle, but it was causing chaos in the cellar ... so it had to go ... along with its lovely wood frame.

Re: Two purchases with question marks

Port friends: I got some 'mixed'auction-style purchasing aaaadelivered today. Some less-familiar are a a bottle of Colhieta 1967 Quinta da Romaneira Porto, and a half of Delaforce LBV, that I think did come into the Michigan market, and for which CellarTracker has a monograph stating 'unfiltered'. ...

Re: Tawnies with Indication of Age - When were they first produced?

For those who are advocating an average age of the contents of the bottle, are you taking a straight average (40 years + 20 years=30 year tawny)? Or, a weighted average (90% 40 years + 10% 20 years = 38 years)? And, in the weighted average, what goes on the label? In my example is it 38 years (actua...

Re: What have you opened this week?

It had been a while since I opened a bottle, so last night popped a 1996 Quevedo Colheita. Fooled my wife ... she thought it was an LBV. Seems to straddle tawny and ruby aspects. Very nice.

Graham's 2000 VP, purchased at their lodge in 2005. Still have it in the cellar. Very first Port I ever bought.

Re: What have you opened this week?

1970 Warre's Vintage. Very nice, and showed beautifully for this one. Shared with a group of friends for a Friday night dinner and paired nicely with cheeses and dark chocolate.

I am not buying anything after 2003 for the same reason Yoda did not want to train Luke Skywalker as a Jedi: Too old, he is.

Nice! Any particular event?
No particular event. It was a bottle that I picked up with my brother-in-law about a year ago and was time to drink. It showed surprisingly young for a 90 year old Port. A very nice experience.

Re: Misconceptions- what is your favorite myth about Port?

A common conversation that I have: Me: Would you like to try some Port? Other: No, I had it in college and didn't like it. Me: What did you have? Other: I don't remember, but it came from a big jug. Me: You should try it again. I am willing to bet that I am offering something better than that. With ...

Re: Relative safety of auction sites and stores

One example that I can think of: A few years ago, I bought an unmarked, actively leaking, filthy bottle with a degraded cork and a low fill level from a local store that I have purchased from with some frequency. The price was not bad, so I took a chance. It turned out to be a 1963 Fonseca Vintage ...

Re: Relative safety of auction sites and stores

Hi Gregory ... and welcome! I am not much on advice, but I can tell you my approach as I have struggled with the same questions. In general, I am not sure that you can trust anyone until you have developed some kind of trustworthy relationship with them. That means that the first purchase with them ...
