30 Year Old Tawny Port by S. Leonardo

Post by Eric Menchen »

Orange-red and totally clear. First whiffs showed some wood and mild warmth when swirled, and later a faint leather aroma. There is also a distinct sweetness in the nose. In the mouth, there is lots and lots of caramel, and a little bit of brown sugar. Some cherry and candied fruits show up, followed by hints of strawberry and apricot. These aren't totally fresh fruit flavors, but not the classic dried fruit you find in most tawnies either. There is a real nice acid tang, fairly strong, to balance out the caramel. The finish is medium long, with wonderful retronasal aromas. 94-95 points. This was a pop-and-pour, and there is just a little bit left to taste later. I'll try to narrow down the score with later tasting, and can envision the score going up too.
