1991 Taylor's Quinta de Vargellas Vintage Port

Post by Eric Menchen »

At this tasting, this was the deepest and darkest of all the Ports served. Even after a day (there was but a glass left), it was still a deep ruby color with just a bit of faint bricking. Aromas of grape stem and eucalyptus, with some berry and concord grape. All of these showed up in the mouth as well, along with some mild spice. Strong acid and lots of tannins made this a great pairing with the roast tenderloin. There was some warmth in the lingering finish, but not overly so. 92 points.

This bottle showed incredibly young, and I think this Port has a lot of life left. In the debate over 1991 vs. 1992, this makes a strong case for 1991, at least compared to the 1992 Fonseca. The Fonseca edged out this one, but I think the Taylor Q.d.Vargellas could win a rematch in a few years. And given the price, this definitely wins the QPR award. Some day I'll have to taste the 1992 Taylor.
