2003 Niepoort VP

Post by Bradley Bogdan »

Initially 6 hour decant, bottle was in perfect shape.

Initially, nothing much was going on. Some heat, lots of acidity, a bunch of very hard tannin, little fruit. Very closed.

Day 2, this had really begun to open. Fleshed out to a medium+ weight wine, a great structure and fruit. Lots of pie spice and brambly pie fruit. A certain meatiness as well.

Day 3, finished this off, it has opened a bit more, but obviously this is still a young and developing port. The tannins are still big and grainy, but still a rich fruit and good acidity make this enjoyable now. I won't touch the next for 10-15 years though. This is a big puppy that still needs to integrate some alcohol, but it's close enough that I think that can happen with time.

-92 points, for now. This will almost certainly go up with some time.
