2007 Cockburn LBV - Quite a Surprise

Post by Mahmoud Ali »

I had thought that the Cockburn LBV with no bottling date/statement would be light and simple so I've never given it a try. Recently I came across some '07 bottles being cleared out at quite the discount - just above C$13 which, at the moment, is under US$12 - and decided to give it a try. Well, I must say that I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was for an inexensive every-day port.

The colour was of course dark, a ruby red hue, and the nose was a blend of ribena fruit and a dark, slately, minerally quality with only a hint of heat - very nice. On the palate it had a fruity attack, sweet cherry and dry minerality in a quiotic mix, followed by soft ripe tannins and a dry, finish - very enjoyable in a simple but lush way. Quite nice.

I went back and bought the remaining four bottles and already half of them have disappeared. A very nice effort by Cockburn's.

Mahmoud.
