1964 Krohn White Colheita Port

Post by Andy Velebil »

Bottled in 2007. Loads of butterscotch, brown sugar, acid, citrus, and candied pralines that one would think this was going to be overtly sweet. But not so. Fully bodied with flavors, yet that acidity keeps this light on its feet and kept me going back for more. This bottle didn't stand a chance and didn't last long as a result. I've had some slight bottle variation in these as they are getting more bottle age. This bottle was perfect and showed what this Port is capable of.

Do you know if they were all bottled at once, or if there are various bottling dates?

I know for sure that there are a variety of bottling dates for this Port. If you are asking Rune if all his were a single bottling date, then he will have to answer that. ;-)

edit: Sorry I meant Andy! (not Rune)

Most of mine are from 2007 and within that there is some variation. What I've also discovered is these no longer travel well. That is, flying with them then opening them within a few days later seems to now not be good for them. I'm sure if they sat for a while longer then all would be well. The few remaining I have left will be consumed around my neck of the woods.

I remember the last time I had this, in the Sandeman lodge on the day of the Douro Barco Regatta, after the finish, in 2013. It was served blind by none other than Axel Probst. It was a stunningly great bottle and a generous pour too.

I love these, and have a stash in my cellar since it is one of the few birth year Ports that I can find. The Noval (2006, and 2008 bottlings), and the Kopke (2013) are the others that are reasonably easy to find.

My Krohns all appear to be 2007 bottlings. I didn't check them all, but the 5 in front are all 2007 and the case was purchased as a single lot so I assume they're all the same.
