2009 Alves de Sousa vintage port

Post by Rune EG »

In view of the high quality and high scores for the 2011 Alves de Sousa vintage port, we wanted to try the 2009-version. We tested their 2009- and the 2011 vintage ports two evenings after each other. Tested at 6 hrs + 8 hrs + 11 hrs decanting.

6 hrs: Deep dark red/purple colour. Pleasant aroma of fruit, slightly “raw” (but acceptable), and also touch of minerals. No spirit at all. Full body. Taste is very smooth/elegant at start, fruity all the way, nice tannins, a bit powerful, dry towards the end. Medium to long aftertaste. Lacking a bit “personality”. 90-91 pts.

8 hrs: Deep dark red/purple colour. The fruity aroma is now more broad and interesting. Still no spirit. Full body. Taste is powerful, elegant, more “personality”, some minerals. Well balanced. Two pints up now 92-93 pts.

11 hrs: Deep dark red colour. Fruity powerful aroma where the contents is opening up in a balanced way. No spirit. Full body. Now showing a well-structured/well balanced vintage port. Still rather fruity in style. Good balance power/elegance. A bit dry towards the end. Final score 93 pts.
