1994 Quinta do Castelinho VP

Post by Bradley Bogdan »

Cork in pristine condition, on the short side, branded. Fill level ideal.

Decanted about 6 hours.

Solidly ruby color, no bricking, but definitely beginning to throw serious sediment and mature, 70% opaque. Perfectly appropriate color.

Nose is relatively simple, though decidedly attractive. Full of fresh strawberries and raspberries, as well as hint of medicinal depth, and a bit of clove as well.

Attractive palate, again full of red fruits, slightly medicinal tinge on the back end and a medium body. There is a flavor of some clove on the palate as well, and some decent grip, but no tactile impression of spice, as you might get with say Taylor. Fully integrated spirit and very pleasing mouthfeel.

This isn't a particularly cerebral wine, but it's in a perfect spot at the moment, probably the early side of its window. It seems to have the structure to continue aging gracefully for the next decade or perhaps more, but I don't get the impression it will ever be very complex.
