The New 7 Wonders
26 Mar 2007

On the 07/07/07, 2200 after Greece, the 7 hill city, Lisbon, stages one of the greatest events of all times, the Universal Declaration of the New 7 Wonders.

Envisioned by the New 7 Wonders Foundation and presented by the original 007, Sean Connery, the great decision of the New 7 Wonders will take place in Lisbon, at the Luz Stadium, on the 7th of July 2007 – the day 07, of the month 07, of the year 07.

After Expo 98 and the European Soccer Championship, the Universal Declaration of the New 7 Wonders puts Portugal, once again, on the spot light for an unforgettable event. Madonna and Mariza will be singing a duet, for the opening ceremony, followed by a musical show for over 50.000 people with other featured singers.

Lisbon’s streets will also take part in this world event, having the 21 finalists represented by metal statues painted by a variety of artists. Terreiro do Paço, Portugal’s historical Commerce Square (Praça do Comercio), will have the largest mosaic in the world, put together by every vote carefully glued to a small tile, in a 200mx200m area, the equivalent to 100 million votes.

This is considered to be the largest worldwide election and is a once in a lifetime opportunity to vote for the New 7 Wonders.

Egypt says no pyramids photo on Portuguese stamps
Sun Jun 3, 2007 6:10PM BST

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egypt has refused to allow images of its Pyramids to be used on a Portuguese postal stamp featuring sites in a competition to name the new seven wonders of the world, the state-run news agency said on Sunday.

The Middle East News Agency (MENA) quoted Zahi Hawass, Egypt's antiquities chief, as saying the pyramids at Giza should not be used on stamps issued for commercial purposes or included in a competition that is not based on scientific standards.

The Zurich-based New 7 Wonders Foundation removed the pyramids from the competition it is sponsoring after their inclusion sparked an outcry in Egypt.

The organisation, established by Swiss/Canadian filmmaker Bernard Weber, instead lists the pyramids -- the only original wonder of the world to have survived to the present day -- as an honorary candidate for which the public cannot vote.

Twenty-one sites from different historical periods around the world are still in the race, among them the Acropolis in Greece, the Statue of Liberty in the United States, France's Eiffel Tower, and the Kremlin and Red Square in Russia.

The public can vote online on http://www.new7wonders.com or by phone, with the winners to be announced on July 7 in Lisbon.

Hawass called the competition, claimed to be the largest global poll ever held, a "farce," MENA reported.

It said he had asked the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to assign 300 antiquities experts and intellectuals instead to choose the new wonders based on scientific and historical criteria.

The ancient Greeks laid out the seven wonders of the world more than two thousand years ago, including sites around the Mediterranean such as the Lighthouse of Alexandria and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon.

The world has gone mad :?

How can it be that some jumped up museum director in Cairo can dictate what the Portuguese postal service can put on their stamps? Surely they don't have a global patent or copyright on pictures of the Pyramids!

Perhaps Portugal should relinquish their place in the Top 10 most peaceful countries by sticking two fingers up to Mr Hawass and using the picture anyway 8--)

PS: Can we nominate Alan C's first TN for consideration?
