NEW BOOK SHEDS LIGHT ON STRONG PORTUGUESE PRESENCE IN CALIFORNIA

Capelinhos: Azorean Immigration to America

SAN JOSE, CA—April 15, 2008—Portuguese Heritage Publications today announced the release of its newest publication Capelinhos: Azorean Immigration to America.

In just a little more than two decades, 1959 to 1980, almost one hundred thousand Azoreans left their homes for North America. As a consequence, California received tens of thousands of Portuguese immigrants who have worked to make great contributions to the economic and social fabric of our state—and central California in particular. On the other hand, the Azores lost almost one third of its population, the majority of which between the ages of 18 and 40 years old.

This extraordinary exodus and its implications on the social and economic future of the Azores and the Portuguese communities in North America is the main subject of the newest release from PHPC, Capelinhos: Azorean Immigration to America. A Herculean effort of over one hundred researchers, scholars, translators and editors, under the coordination of Tony Goulart, this new book will be released in San Jose on May 3, in time for the 50th Anniversary of the eruption of the Capelinhos volcano in Faial, Azores.

Due to the extraordinary financial support of the Portuguese community in the United States and Dr. Alzira Silva, Directora Regional das Comunidades, this 450 pages book will be released in hard cover, full color, deluxe edition and profusely illustrated with many historic pictures. Each book will also include the DVD Vulcao dos Capelinhos by Antonio da Rosa Furtado and many photos from the collection of the late Manuel Cristiano da Silva.

With Dr. Alzira Silva as a guest of honor, a presentation will take place in San Jose on Friday, May 2, 2008, 7:30 PM, at Portuguese Band Hall, 100 N 27st Street, San Jose. A cocktail party will follow the presentation. Admission is free.

Portuguese Heritage Publications of California, Inc., is a non-profit corporation staffed entirely by volunteers who recognize the importance of researching and documenting important aspects of the Portuguese experience in California.
