Fixed: AOL Login...and login...and login

Post by Stewart T. »

I've made some changes on the Webserver that will hopefully fix one major issue that at least some of the people using the AOL browser have encountered: having to continually log on over and over, and sometimes being taken back to the login page when you try to post to the forum.

The explanation (skip the rest of this message if you are just happy it shouldn't happen anymore)...

Many large Internet Service Providers like AOL use Proxy Web Access Servers to protect their users. Every time a user requests a web page, it is routed to these proxy servers and then to the user who requested the page. Each of these servers has its own IP address, similar to a postal address in the real world. The problem is that every page request could be handled by any one of the proxy server's in AOL massive proxy server farm. As a result, the request by the same user for subsequent pages MIGHT have a different IP address as it's origination, making our site think that it is two separate users requesting those pages. Our site can't track that it is the same person if your IP address keeps changing.

So...I've tweaked some of the settings on our web server to be able to handle this nasty little situation.

If you are using the AOL browser and have any additional problems, please submit a help desk ticket from the FTLOP home page.
