Favicon

Post by Julian D. A. Wiseman »

As a reminder, I have designed a favicon for Image.

(What’s a favicon? Go to news.bbc.co.uk and look carefully next to the place where the URL is typed. Cool little icon! Bookmark that website. Cool icon in bookmarks. FTLOP could do the same.)

Instructions.
1. PM me an email address to which the .ico file should be sent. (Do not attempt to derive it from the .gif — too many things can look nasty.)
2. Add this .ico to the root directory.
3. Add the .gif (Image) to the smilies, with shortcuts :ftlop: and :FTLOP:.
4. Enjoy excellent glass of port whilst looking smug.

No, not at all. All it takes is artistic judgement, some skill, an aesthetic sensibility, and a general liking for clarity and simplicity.

Or maybe you wanted me to point you at GraphicConverter (though I’m using the old version 5.9).

Windoze may be terrible, but there are — I presume — graphics programs for that too. Perhaps even some that allow saving in a .ico format.

.ico

Reminds me of a Grateful Dead song.

Wikipedia suggests that the lyrics predate the Grateful Dead.

GIMP (= GNU Image Manipulation Program) is free, multi-platform, and can cope.

Though the other requirement, æsthetic sensibility, doesn’t do much good — FTLOP still isn’t using the favicon.

That is wondering me too. Mods, accept the flavicon, it looks very nice and it really stands out between the other bookmarks.

It is there and working, and has been awhile. Your cache might have decided that there isn't one: try a different browser or a different machine.

Not sure why you guys aren't seeing it, as I can see it too and it's been there awhile now. I've let Stewart and Dave know about your issues.

It seems to work fine on FireFox. However, there are still issues on Internet Explorer. I haven't tried Safari yet. Eric, which browser are you using? Internet Explorer is problematic with the favicon when it's been changed after you've visited the site. I spent hours working on fixing the icon in IE and then had to let it drop to work on other things. I'll make sure it's on my list to look at when I get time.
