2009 Quinta do Pinto Touriga Nacional

Post by Miguel Simoes »

Havent had many 100% touriga nacional wines. Wondering if my finding it somewhat underwhelming comes from that. It was nice to drink, but not nearly as tannin heavy and/or fruity as i expected. Expected it to be far more full bodied.

Being a single variety you won't get the same depth as you will from a blend...often times. Single varietal Douro wines, in my experience, typically offer a more elegant wine with delicate nuances. Also, I find this grape very difficult for some producers to master by itself. There are some very nice TN wines, but very few I've had have been exceptional.

2009 is on the young side for a straight TN wine IMO. If you could try one with about 10 years age, you should be more impressed. As Andy mentioned, they tend to be more elegant than overwhelming.
