Interesting choices. There was certainly a focus on areas outside the Douro, especially Bairrada. A lot of value wines as well. Interesting that he chose Wine + Soul Manoela VV over Pintas.

An odd list for sure. And odd that there are a few ports and one Madeira. My reading of it would have assumed it was for non-fortified wines only.

Yup. What defines what wines make the list? Where are the 2000 vintage DOC's? Where's the Abandonado? Not enough Dao's on the list. A list of the 50 best producers would be better IMO.

well, we have no inkling of why these wines made the grade. It's just a list, with nothing else...

Wines of Portugal is a trade organization, and their goal is to showcase all of what Portugal has to offer. Keep in mind that the actual heading is 50 Great Portuguese Wines 2013, and not 50 Greatest Portuguese Wines 2013.
